Elon Musk tells Italians to have more children during an appearance at a political conference in Rome: 'Make more Italians'

Elon Musk was the guest of honor at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's "Atreju" political festival in Rome on Saturday evening.

Taking to the stage with X Æ A-12, one of his sons, in his arms, Musk told the crowd gathered at the Sant'Angelo Castle that Italy should be having more children.

"Make more Italians to save Italy's culture," he said at one point in the discussion when asked about Italy's immigration and demographics.

Musk said he was in favor of legal immigration but that alone would not solve the issue of population decline for industrialized nations.

"My advice to all government leaders and people is make sure you have children to create a new generation," he said, "or the culture of Italy, Japan and France will disappear."

"We are in danger of no longer having these countries," Musk, who has previously said he viewed "population collapse due to low birth rates" as more dangerous than global warming, added.

Before becoming Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni was one of the most strident voices on migration in the European Union. As an opposition politician, she warned darkly of efforts to substitute native Italians with ethnic minorities and promised to put in place a naval blockade to stop migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

During her time in office, she has taken a markedly different tack — presiding over a sharp spike in irregular arrivals and introducing legislation that could see as many as 1.5 million new migrants arrive through legal channels.

Coming at a time when the right and far right are in ascendance ahead of the European Parliament election next spring, Meloni’s policies represent an important course correction for the Continent’s conservative bloc, as fiery rhetoric yields to the cold practicalities of governing.

“Once in government, you need to find solutions, instead of scapegoats,” said Claudio Cerasa, the editor of the Italian centrist daily Il Foglio.

Meloni is presiding over a country that is economically stagnant and in demographic decline. Over the last decade, Italy has shrunk by some 1.5 million people (more than the population of Milan). In 39 of its 107 provinces, there are more retirees than workers.

It’s numbers like these that prompted Italy’s Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti to warn earlier this month that no reform of the pension system would “hold up in the medium-to-long term with the birth rate numbers we have today in this country.”

Meloni’s legal migration decree estimates Italy needs 833,000 new migrants over the next three years to fill in the gap in its labor force. It opens the door to 452,000 workers over the same period to fill seasonal jobs in sectors like agriculture and tourism as well as long-term positions like plumbers, electricians, care workers and mechanics.

“This is a super pragmatic behavior,” said Matteo Villa, a migration expert at the ISPI think tank in Italy. “There has been a change in narrative.”

Given Italy’s rules on family reunification, which allow residents to bring in relatives, “it’s easy to predict that over something like 10 years, these figures will triple,” bringing in about 1.5 million migrants, said Maurizio Ambrosini, a professor of sociology and an expert on migration at Milan’s university.

Meloni government’s, he added, “has been pushed to implement a more realistic policy” by the entrepreneurial class that makes up an important part of its support.

elon is right. our economy and our government is built on a steady increase in population to fund social services like social security. see what's happening in japan/korea as an example of what's happening to the US/Europe if there weren't pajeets being imported en masse.

I'm not doubting that the population will increase but it takes 20 years before newborn babies start contributing to the economy. they're a burden on taxpayers for the first 18 years of their lives and we need people to support the elderly/disabled/deadbeats/single mothers/children/etc of the country in the meantime. the pipeline from birth to being a good wagie could even be 25+ years if we're talking about professions like doctors

so the bandaid solution is to bring in pajeets/mohammeds for 20 years while we wait for our younger generations to bring us economic prosperity. that or accrue massive amounts of debt trying to pay social security/medicare/whatever services

I disagree. Italy and many European cultures are declining not because it's too expensive to raise kids but because they no longer view the generational household unit as valuable. Throughout history until very recent modern times, generations of families would live together as one unit in one abode. Great grandparents, grandparents, parents and children all under one roof. FIRST, it built stronger familial, cutltural and moral values. Second, it kept cost of living down tremendously. No paid childcare, lower cost of food because everything was cooked at home, reduced entertainment cost because your family was your social outlet, lower cost of housing, etc., AND marriages last LONGER. Not everyone's cup of tea, especially with the lure of independence and freedom.

I'm not saying this is the solution but at the core, this is why it's different today than it was generations ago. AND you will see in Eastern cultures it's still practiced to this day and why as a family unit it multiplies more rapidly while at the same time progress economically. You'll see in Eastern cultures, the comparative wealth has increased many folds in the last decade versus European cultures that have abandoned generational households.
