As a half-European American it grosses me out that Americans think it's normal to wear shoes in the house after stepping in dog poop and public restroom piss. In the rest of the world this is considered uncivilized. Americans act like I'm being rude when I tell them to take their sh/t-stained shoes off before entering my residence.

I'm sure this depends on the person / family.

Growing up we never took our shoes off in the house.

When I got my own house, I did start taking my shoes off, because I take exceptional care of my stuff (whereas my parents aren't as obsessed as me at looking after their things).

If someone came around and didn't take off their shoes I probably wouldn't sweat it too much because I have hard flooring downstairs, but when I met my wife she started going on about "poo particles" on the bottom of people's shoes, and it drives her crazy if they don't take their shoes off when they come in.
