    Question Additional Glute Training Necessary?

I always see women train and focus on training their glutes, doing hip thrusts, cable kickback, or cable pull throughs for example. Shouldn't men train glutes as well? Or do the usual squats and deadlifts do more than enough for the glutes already?

    I do.

Hip thrusters, extended range leg abductions (with ankle weights). It's certainly added to my overall mass which at my stage in lifting when gains don't come easily is very welcome.

Glutes are probably the most underrated muscle in terms of training it and developing it.

Think about it, the glutes are probably the biggest two sets of muscles you have on your body, it makes absolute sense that you should train it. Nevermind for aesthetic purposes; developing strength in your glutes will help you on the squat/deadlift, help in preventing lower back injuries, etc. A lot of us sit on our asses all day causing our glutes to weaken and become inactive.

Squats and Deadlifts alone IMO don't do enough for the glutes. Perhaps if you do RDL or Sumo, but I think something like a Hip Thruster or a Pullthrough should be done to directly target them and get that contraction/squeeze.

cliffs: Glute training isn't only for women. Don't be a pussy and train your glutes!

In addition to squats, deads, and other stuff I do some GHRs now, ended up buying a GHD stand. It must be a good exercise the first time I tried doing GHRs I could hardly walk/crouch the next day...good soreness, not bad.

That's pretty much what I had to say to myself the first time I did barbell hip thrusts and felt weirdly self-conscious about being only man in my gym to ever do them (as far as I know).

I assume GHR stands for Glute-Ham Raises? What's GHD?

It's a fairly underrated postural muscle as well. I'm not saying everyone needs to do glute targeting as some people build them great with traditional lifts, but it's a frequently neglected muscle for sure.

I've never done anything other than squat and DL and I work to find pants that fit over my butt without them being a 38 inch waste.

What's the "best" glute exercise to do after squats and deadlifts? I don't need a glute day or anything but I'll add a glute exercise in for now and do a couple sets.

Side note, am I supposed to squeeze the glutes at the top of my squat?
