As of press time, the Irving, Texas company has suspended bakery operations at all its factories, and said its stores will remain open for several days to sell already-baked products.

Hostess previously warned employees that it would have to file for bankruptcy and sell assets if plant operations didn't return to normal levels by Thursday evening (November 15). Workers continued to strike, thus, giving the company no other option.

SOJA is correct. I know people that worked for Interstate Bakeries. Two of them were desperately looking for other jobs (and found them) about a year ago, they saw what was coming. The others weren't operations people so didn't have as much insight as to what was going on in the company, but even production people have been trying to find jobs for months. They've watched management jump ship and figured out what was going on.

But don't worry, I'm sure Kraft or nabisco will buy the hostess name brand and produce twinkies, etc.

People who whine about unions really don't understand how much they keep this country together. If it weren't for teachers unions, roughly 260 teachers would have lost their jobs this past year in my former school district. 90+ police officers would have been given a pink slip and wouldn't be able to find any jobs for months, factory workers would be grossly underpaid for the work they do, state healthcare workers wouldn't have a leg to stand on, nurses and doctors too, etc.

If it weren't for unions, people would all be paid what they're truly worth - what the market says they're worth. If Hostess paid workers $10/hour but another company paid $12, then the best workers would go to the other company and Hostess would be left with the lower quality workers and have to increase wages to stay competitive. If 90 police officers would have lost their jobs and wouldn't have been able to find any others, then obviously we didn't need those 90 police officers to begin with. Cutting unions would cut a ton of waste.

In the long run, many unions in today's world hurt workers, but people are too stupid to see it.

Your post makes no sense. A company isn't bound by law to keep a poorly trained worker around. Unions negotiate wages they believe their members deserve, and it's never a defacto rate. Unfortunately, police officers are always in need. It also allows them to keep the pay the deserve. A 10 year veteran deserves more than $60,000 a year when the hiring amount is only $10,000 less. The idea that unions are useless falls within the realm of people thinking that if we tax the rich more than they already are, they won't be able to create more jobs. If we got rid of unions and lowered public services to bare minimums to get over the financial crisis, we introduce austerity, which is a failure. Not a success. Austerity has rarely worked outside of a major world event, e.g. WWII. Don't serve me your bull****. You know full well that Hostess was going down months ago. Anyone who works in finance knew.

The chief executive of Hostess Brands Inc. said he is slashing executive compensation in the aftermath of creditor allegations that the company may have pushed management's salaries higher in the months leading up to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in an effort to skirt bankruptcy rules.

Gregory F. Rayburn, a restructuring expert who took the helm at Hostess last month, said in an interview that the top four executives working under him had agreed to cut their annual salaries to $1 until the company emerges from bankruptcy or Dec. 31, whichever comes first. The executives—Gary Wandschneider, John Stewart, David Loeser and Richard Seban—had seen their salaries increase by 75% to 80% last July, at a time when the baking company had already hired restructuring lawyers, according to creditors.

Further down the totem pole at the Twinkie maker, four additional executives agreed to return to the salaries they were receiving before the July increase

They've been having financial troubles for years. And no, it isn't as difficult as you claim it is. Six cops were given a notice and booted in 2 months despite being in unions. They didn't receive compensation either. Competition is always there regardless of whether there's a union or not. I've never read or heard of a legitimate excuse to get rid of unions that isn't based on the common word spread around much like politics, e.g. Obama is a Muslim, by so many nutty right-wingers.

Didn't the company say they would stay in business if everyone returned to work by a certain day? Sure they might be struggling but so are a lot of companies but they still stay in business. How much money did the company lose from the strike? I don't think most of us know how difficult it is to run a profitable and competitive business.
