So I started to experience this very frustrating, sharp lower back pain on the right side of my back. The first time it happened was three weeks or so ago, when I was doing leg curls, last legs exercise after hard workout. I was already tired and used too much weight and I think I pulled the muscle. But the thing is that it doesn't hur at all most of the time. If the muscle was strained or pulled, I think it should always hurt and especially when doing exercises.
Right now I started Jim Wendlers workout - The "Boring But Big" 3-Month Challenge.
For example I can do Deadlifts for 3x5 with heavy weights just fine, then I go to do squats with low weight for 5x10 and I still can do fine, but around 4th or 5th set, the pain comes back. The pain is really sharp and it's not my spine or anything, I can clearly feel its the muscle or some nerve on the right side of my lower back. It's painful to even walk back home, but after I get back and lay down for 10mins up to hour, my back is completely fine again. Also when I did 3x5 squats with heavy weight, I was still feeling good, but then I did first set of 5x10 Deadlifts with light weight and pain got really bad, so I had to stop my workout and go home. So it's really frustrating, I took off last week from any kind of workout and started stretching in the mornings now, but I still did get the pain yesterday after doing squats 5x10.
Does anyone have any idea what could this be and how to deal with it?

I cant shed any light but I'll share my similar experience.
I used to work as a courier and part of my job was sorting newspapers and magazines so I'd be bent over for 2/3 hours twice a week. After a few months of this I noticed a pain in the lower right side of my back. Not all the time but mostly when I sat down or bent over I never had any treatment and it eventually just went away.
Few months ago I got the same pain after squats/deadlifts. I went to the doctor who suggested rest. After a few weeks it was no better so I went back to the doctor who put me on anti inflammitories. Finished those and my back was no better. I went back and had an xray which showed nothing. I tried physio and chiro which helped a bit, but didn't fix it. I've narrowed it down to a lumbar strain or a slightly buldging/herinated disc.
Sorry man, I hope you can find out whats causing the problem cos it's laid me off for months, maybe over a year now.

My guess is that it's a strain. And before you ask yourself whether or not the strain should be healed already, it takes 6 - 12 weeks to heal a strain in the lumbar area. Recall, the lumbar area of the body is your core, it supports almost every single excercise that you do. It takes a while to heal.
I would not, under any circumstances, suggest rest. What I would recommend is to give periodicity between your squats and your DL's. At least 2 days.

Hi, I am having a similar issue.
I started the Stronglifts 5x5 program around 3 months ago and so far I'm doing very well. However, I experience a chronic pain in my right side of back around my ribs and beneath my shoulder blade for the past 2 months during or towards the end of my workout. I especially feel it more on the way when walking back to my home after workout. But the pain is gone after an hour or little more when I reach home and lie on the couch. I do NOT feel any pain the next day too. I once took a week off but the pain didn't go away.
Let me add one thing: I don't specifically remember doing anything wrong in my exerises except that I was having a very bad "butt wink" during squats. After reaching around 60 Kg on squats I realized my "butt wink" and then spent over a month to eliminate it by reducing my range of motion during squats and also doing some ankle doesiflexion exercises to help with reducing the "Butt Wink." But the pain is way up in the right side of my back and I think shouldn't be caused by the "butt wink" during squats. Instead "butt wink" could be a reason if the pain were in the lower back or in the spine area but it is not there. I also had some technique problem with deadlift but i fixed them now.
I did some online search but didn't find any satisfactory answer. Some say it's because of problem in the lumbar region etc.
Kindly, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Having the same issue... It started about a month ago but I was needing a deload anyway so I extended it to two weeks to give things time to heal up. My hip flexor were wrecked also been back in the gym a week now and the pain is still there in my lower back but it's very dull now
Was thinking about switching out squats for leg press for another week to see if that help and a trip to the chiropractor for a realignment
