Wholemeal/Wholewheat bread?

This may be a stupid question, if so i apologize, but.............Is wholemeal bread here in the UK the same as the Wholewheat bread that the American guys and gals on this website eat?

I only ask as it seems that all of the brown bread we sell over here is labelled 'Wholemeal'.

As far, as I know, wholemeal = wholewheat.

Also, check the ingredients list, as a load of the supposed 'wholemeal' bread over here is incorrectly labelled as such. If it has "wholemeal wheat flour" as the first ingredient, you're good to go, but a lot of stuff labelled wholemeal still has "wheat flour" as its primary ingredient.

Okay cheers mate, I will check that. Wheat flour is still okay though right? as i love crumpets and bagels and such like and they are prmairily wheat flour!!

yes, wholemeal = wholewheat


also check the ingredient listing to see how much of it is actually wholemeal, sum companies put only like 10% wholemeal and the brown color is due to food coloring. Buy a reputable brand such as burgen, their $hit is always 100%ish wholemeal.

White flour is made from the endosperm only. Whole grain or wholemeal flour is made from the entire grain, including bran, endosperm, and germ.

You lose a bit of fibre, vits, minerals but in the context of a balanced diet its not going to make any significant difference.

Awesome, thanks for clearing that up for me, I will continue to chow down on them crumpets and english muffins as well as the Wholemeal bread for sandwiches
