do some HIIT training for fat loss while on alternate days hitting the weights to gain muscle. I would say 3 times a week for each. At the same time do some carb cycling. You have about 10 weeks before summer hits ( June 1).
I think you can add some muscle while reducing fat doing this. At your age the fat will melt off if you do this correctly, and you will add some lean mass at the same time. Be careful, don't watch the scale, it will probably dip a little bit but maybe not as much as you would like and it could move up a bit at times. Measure your waist, and take other body measurements, and watch the mirror.
Go to the 'contest prep" forum and find Layne's sticky for contest prep for more info.

Layne's precontest article (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/layne36.htm) is not crap, it's some of the most solid free advice you'll ever come across regarding fat loss.

I was commenting on just what I quoted. I didn't read the whole thread so I don't know what you guys were debating but I just wanted to shed some light on the "recomp" idea. Yes, Layne's article is purely fatloss (I am using a lot of ideas now as I am prepping for a show).

Mikey wants to be lean for summer. I think he is fat and lacks muscle. If he just diets he will lose muscle; if he bulks he'll be even fatter. If he does 5 weeks of each then he will have a bit more muscle but end up just with the same amount of body fat.
I suggest he 1) eats so that he doesn't lose muscle mass, that he 2) does HIIT to lose body fat, and 3) lifts heavier to add muscle ( heavier than he is doing per his log.) If he does all that he can be leaner and have more muscle mass. Layne's article can help with all that without me writing a whole article just for him. He can tweak Layne's process for his needs, and he could do much worse than that advice.

Sounds solid to me. Newbie can gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously, but obviously at a slower rate. I'm an advocate of HIT cardio no matter what the experience consists of.....it's extremely helpful for fat loss and overall cardiovascular health.
My take on it....
He doesn't have enough muscle mass to just try to lose fat....he'll look sickly
He's carrying too much fat to strictly bulk....he'll look REAL BAD
My advice is to implement a solid weight training program along with a solid diet and moderate cardio plan.
