Underrated - full squat. Most people believe that a full squat is bad for the knees, but scientific evidence has proven otherwise. But in my gym I am surprised to see people hit parallel when they squat.

Overrated - Seated calf raises. Standing calf raises are sufficient enough.

Sorry, my man, but I agree with that chap. Doing standing calf raises with straight legs will hit the soleus as well. There is no need to try and emphasize them more unless you're a bodybuilder that wants to compete.

    your legs aren't straight.

i am not going to compete and seated calf raises have been good to me over the yrs. limiting yourself to one movement is a dumb.

Cool so we can ignore emphasizing rear delts because they are worked enough in rows...unless we are competing of course.

My calves are growing nicely even without those seated raises. Thox.

Yes. Some people I know don't do sh*t for their rear delts but they still look good.

    We get it: you're trolling.

Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefit for many, I firmly believe rear delt work is important for injury prevention.

Rear delt work is vital, but comparing them and rows to the gastroc and soleus was a bit off.

I appreciate it. Your argument brings me to my next overrated exercise. Calf raises. I see people do endless sets, starting on the leg press machine, moving to the seated calf raise machine next to it, then over a few more feet to the smith machine. Not to mention they are usually sets of 20+ reps.

I don't get this. Why do you watch what other people are doing? If they're not in your way, you should mind your own business and do your lifting.

Agreed. It's all the same motion and the angle doesn't vary much on the lower leg. Seated calf raises vs standing calf raises would have the greatest degree of difference, but you all know what I think about that.

Ive never understood when people say "mind your own business when in the gym." I don't lift with my eyes closed, im gonna notice if someone has been hogging 8 45 lb plates for half an hour while im waiting to bench or squat.

    1. Calves are a difficult muscle to grow for many people, and may need to be pummeled significantly before responding.

    2. Calves often respond very well to high rep work.

if it was people that knew what they're doing i wouldnt be so butt hurt about it. 20 effortless reps with a horrible range of motion doesnt make the calves grow. In my gym people that spend the most time doing calf raises are the ones that lift "low weight, high reps" to get "toned."

We have a lot of those people at my gym too. Can't really do anything about it.

I work out at the Y, so I'm going to go ahead and say bicep curls. Half the time ppl are doing damn near a full body exercise, throwing their legs and shoulders into it trying to get the 25 lb dbs up for that mad pump.
Is thou perturbed, brethren? Come forth to a notable degree of proximity, male sibling!

I equate calf raises with forearm curls. A little isolation work is alright, but lets not go overboard. Ok, theyre not quite the same. But spending more time on calves than quads, hamstrings, and glutes isnt what I'd spend my time doing. But to each his own.
