First post in the new thread. Got this 22" Trigger fish out on the gulf Sunday. Too bad they're out of season. Caught two under sized snapper as well. Did also get my first mahi, though it was just a little chicken.

In. I have a few stories, ill keep them short.
Biggest bass I ever caught. It was during bedding season "surprise". We have a man made lake down in southern AZ called Parker canyon. Its right on the border of mexico. Me and my dad was fishing on the bank and not having much luck. These guys on a boat were having a field day catching 2-3 fish every few minutes. I felt a "thud" on my line and just froze, I pulled some of the slack out and noticed my line starting to straighten itself out very quickly. I set the hook and the drag starts going out like crazy. Eventually it stopped and I real in, then it fights, rinse and repeat. Eventually it decides to surface and its so big it can barely get out of the water. My dad was freaking out and stopped to coach me a bit. After about 5 minutes I get it in. 7lbs with a big belly, the guys on the boat were shocked and of course started casting in our direction. I let the fish go and people started freaking out. The boat shop took a picture of me with the fish and its still on the wall till this day. I caught the fish back in 2000.

I just got a boat and need to start fishing more.
I live on the Gulf Coast so most of my fishing will be inshore and maybe 30-50 miles out offshore near oil rigs and stuff. Looking for a cheap versatile rod/reel for the offshore stuff. any suggestions?
Also I'd like to start crabbing. Any tips?LOL @ people who follow politics

My friend uses Penn reels and Ugly Stick rods on most of his stuff. They work just fine. He's been using them for years. A good combo if you're not looking to spend tons of money. Ugly Sticks in general are good rods IMO. Shakespeare reels however leave a lot to be desired.

In. After years of using buddies backup reels I finally got myself a Penn Fierce saltwater combo and a variety of tackle last month. Been checking YT vids of knots and **** out.
Going out this weekend with brother in law and father in law on FIL's boat to fish in the mangroves. Usually come back with some keeper red snappers and last time got a Pompano that was almost OVER slot - great eating off of those.Smooth Seas don't make Strong Sailors. Keep your head up.

A friend of mine asked me to take a couple guys out back in the spring and they would pay me for a smallie trip. I couldn’t do it but worked out a date and had them out this morning. The older guy is 77 and said it was his life long dream to fish smallmouth. They are salmon guys and just never really did the bass this. They both had a blast and out fished me.
