Hi, I'm new here and just started a workout program. I'll be 55 yrs. old in Aug. and am working out in the evenings before I go to bed. Have noticed that after working out I can't sleep at night. Would like to know if I should start working out in the mornings before I go to work?
Thanks
Gregg

I switched to morning workouts several years ago for a number of reasons. But one of them was that I also have a hard time going to sleep if I work out at night. Just amps me up completely. Ultimately you have to go with what works best for you--because if it doesn't work for you, you won't stick with it. For me, the benefits of first thing in the morning far outweigh working out later.

Your probably reacting to the increased adrenalin and cortisol that results from a strenuous workout, which in turn can make it difficult to fall asleep. If possible, try working out 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. If you're using a pre workout product, make sure it doesn't have a stimulant like caffeine in it. You can also try taking a hot shower before bed. The temperature drop from getting out of the shower will help your body shut itself down, aiding in better sleep. If that doesn’t work, you may be forced to work out in the morning or another time of day convenient for you.

I end up fitting workouts in whenever I can while making sure family duties come first. Then I schedule my training around tose activities which may place my workouts in the evening or in the AM. all depends on when you feel you can get in a good quality workout without a ton of distractions and when it won't effect sleep.

When I first tried working out in the morning, I felt really weak...but later found that was more psychological...lol.
Evening workouts tend to get interrupted or disrupted (work, family, etc.) but early morning is my time, so I prefer early morning workout. Additionally, equipment availability is better so workouts tend to be more efficient.

Several people here are saying this, and I agree. Do what works for you. If you find it interferes with sleep, try the morning.
Personally, my best time is about 10 am, but with a full time job that just isn't an option during the week. I tried the after-work routine, but I'm usually pretty beat by then, so it wasn't working for me. I started getting up early and working out before work, and that has been my pattern for years now. Sometimes it's hard to get up. So often, I sleep in ahead of time...meaning I go to bed early because I'm tired and I WANT to lift in the morning.
Whatever you try, the real goal is to stick with it, train hard, and don't let there be excuses for not training. An iron body is built by having an iron mind. You have to decide that you really WANT this, ahead of time. That way, when you're feeling low, your resolve will carry the day. Like sleeping in ahead of time, it's getting the mind set for the hard work ahead of time.
Get under the iron!Every once in a while, there's a sudden gust of gravity...

I'm at my peak at about 20:00 but the issue is that this is also when the gym is most busy. I work shifts and because of my gym's opening times going before an early shift isn't possible. Works out well though for me because it means that I'm usually there between 14:00 & 15:00 each day when it's relatively quiet. I don't think lifting would keep me awake (except maybe the caffeine in the pre), but cardio definitely gives me a second wind of energy.

I do the EARLY morning workout (3AM). Mainly because I have a motivation problem and come up with excuses not to go if I try and go after work. Like most have said though it is all up to you and your body what would work best. Give the mornings a shot or if there is time try early afternoon. See what works best for you and stick with it.

Like many have said - try both and see what works best for you. Sleep is critical, but if you don't recover during the day post-AM workout, that's going to have its own set of problems.
If you're normally quick to stretch/warm-up, then I suggest you allow a bit more time for stretching in the morning (versus evening) as most people are more flexible during the late afternoon than the morning. See: web.mit.edu/tkd/stretch/stretching_3.html#SEC21
