im wondering if putting it in a drink or food is the better option. Any opinions? And when? How often.

If the purpose is fat loss then simply replace some of the fats in your diet with an isocaloric amount of coconut oil.
Best to keep in mind that the fat loss potential is there but it is very, very mild.
I have a video on it which discusses the research on coconut oil/MCTs and fat loss if you are interested.
