My protein bag says to drink one as soon as I wake up, inbetween meals, after working out, & before bed. That's about 5-6 shakes per day. This has to be marketing. Am I right?

Have as many or as little as you want. Protein shakes aren't even needed. They are sold because of convenience in helping hit your daily protein intake requirements. Sometimes it's hard getting 200-300g of protein in a day from whole food, so shakes can help. Whole foods will be the better sources as you are getting micronutrients as well and will likely keep you full for a longer period of time(imo).
Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!
