Thoughts On Why I Left UCLA
Hey guys, since some of you are interested, I thought I'd put up a full post on the reasons behind my decision to leave college. First I'll start by talking about how my college education started. I started at a community college, and spent three years there taking the classes necessary to transfer to a four year university. I work full time while in school so that's the reason why it took 3 years instead of the normal 2. I had no idea what I wanted to do. The idea of having to have a major in college always blew my mind. I understand the idea of it, but what if I want to take a bunch of different classes in different areas of interest?
So, since I had no idea what I wanted to do, I choose a major that allowed me to get into almost any college because it wouldn't be impacted (Philosophy). I got in to UCLA and was very excited mostly because my friends and family thought it was such an accomplishment. In reality, it was me just beating the system. During my entire college career, community college and UCLA, I completely BS'd all of my work (like almost everyone else). Everything I turned in was complete crap. I rarely went to class, I never bought books, and I never studied. I got in to UCLA with a 3.12 GPA. Nothing to bat an eye at. My first quarter at UCLA went well. I got in A in a Communications class, a B+ in a film class, and a C- in my Philosophy class. I knew that classes that were interesting I would do well in, and ones I hated I would not. When I care about something, I put effort in. When I don't, I don't.
Sure many people will say "A good person always tries hard no matter what blah blah blah." That's complete crap to me. When I care about something I'll put my effort in to it, if I don't, phuck it. So then next few quarters my grades dramatically dropped because I had to take classes for my major. I soon failed a class, dropped to a 2.2 GPA, and was put on academic probation. At this point I was ready to drop out, but with enough pressure from my parents, and just a year left of school, I decided to tough it out.
A counselor recommended that I switch to history because it was an easier major, complete crap. I did well a quarter after this, and then this last quarter I failed another class. I got a letter saying that I would not be given financial aid again. I told myself and my parents that when I started to have to pay more for school, I was done. So I talked to my counselor, she thought me leaving was best for me because I was not enjoying school, and I bounced.
I was worried that I'd regret it. NOT AT ALL. So happy and free. I still don't know what I want in life. I know what I'm passionate about. I have a ton of books I read regarding fitness and nutrition. Might work on getting some certifications. Either way, I have a job I love, and for now there's plenty of room for growth.
Sorry for the wall of text
Cliffs:
-Went to community college
-Transferred to UCLA
-Never knew what I wanted to do
-Went to school to impress friends and family
-Grades when in the dump cus I didn't care
-Dropped out and felt great!
Any questions?Team Mustache

You know, I'm a big proponent of school and advancing your education, but I also believe that school simply isn't for everyone. Those "types" typically will find success just taking a different path. Actually, they don't have to be bound to a job in their major, so they might even have a better quality of life pursuing their dream than working for a check...if that makes sense.
I definitely support the decision as long as you don't become a bum :-)
I mean hell....I dropped out of HS. However, I knew I wanted to go to school, so I went to UMD and graduated in Dec. 2010.Fat to Fit to Fat to Bodybuilder

Thanks for the support and input man! You know I ALWAYS appreciate it, no matter what aspect of life it regards.
Don't worry, I have never been, and won't be a bum. It's funny, school was the only part in life I was a bum about. I work my ass off at work and the gym. If I care about something, I have no problem with putting in immense amounts of effort.

nice writeup about UCLA man, i actually completely understand your situation... it's like areya said, school isn't for everyone. my sister is in the same situation as you. she started at St. Andrews Presbyterian College as an equine science major, until they lost their accreditation. since then she's been through at least half a dozen majors and two schools, none of which have made her happy. and in the end doing something you are miserable doing just isn't worth it. you won't be willing to try at it, and all it does is get worse. as you said above, some ***** like NASM and the like would be a great booster, and i think you'd really enjoy working with it.
congrats on the new low, you've really got things goin nicely now! i gotta ask, how did you get your hashbrowns to patty like that? i've tried before and all they do is crumble lol"The weak-minded would shrink away from what must be done for fear of being ridiculed by the wicked" - Terry Goodkind

Thanks for all the support man! Sorry to hear your sister is going through something similar as me. Hope she finds what makes her happy!
Thanks! These lows have been great. Really motivating. To be honest, I just smushed the hash browns down really hard with the spatula, and was very careful transferring them over. I found spraying some PAM on them can help stick them together. Hope that helps!

QUOTES
Bold part: Brought a smile to my eyes haha. I really try to entertain. Gotta make this stuff fun. Thanks man!
Glad to hear your stance on school. This last week has been amazing not having to deal with school. I really think I made the right decision. Feel great about it. And have been proud to tell people. Hope things get better with work man. That'd bug me so much too.
So glad to hear that. You guys are all fantastic. That's what keeps me coming back!
It's all good! Glad to have you back!
Regarding my thoughts on protein consumption, not yet! Pretty sure I'll be writing it tomorrow. Stay tuned!
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Really good workout. Benching felt better. Less elbow pain. Working my way back in to squatting with some testing sets. Gonna cook a ton tomorrow. Keep you guys posted!Team Mustache
