    Should I use a belt?

    For Squats and Dead lifts.

Haven't done deadlifts before and would really like to strengthen my lower back, ive always had a weak/sore lowerback due to poor posture and video games.

Went to the chiropractor today had some xrays done and found out to my surprise I have "Spina bifida occulta", he said i would of had this from birth.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spina_b...bifida_occulta
Never new I had it, but I also have a mild case of scoliosis.

He said im fine to do weights, just don't do anything that hurts, would it be safer to use a belt so i don't aggravate my spine? I wont be lifting super heavy as im just starting but want to be safe.

A belt, when used correctly, can assist in keeping the core solid during the lift. It doesn't hurt trying it out.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

as a rule of thumb, if you have to ask, you're probably not ready to use a belt

A belt is fine to use, but not as a band-aid for poor form. At first, I'd be more concerned with learning the lift properly. I'd venture a guess that if you didn't know you had this condition, you are probably capable of learning the lift at a lighter weight without the belt.
We don't rise to the occasion, we fall to our level of training.

If you are going to use a belt (which I highly recommend for anyone with any type of back problem), only use it on your top set or top two sets, and make sure you add additional ab/core work to compensate.

In general, I'd consult a physical therapist over a chiropractor.

+1. Current PT school covers (in 3 months) pretty much everything a chiropractor covers in the schooling

Depends on how much it hurts and how much stress you are putting on your lower back. You gotta be a little more careful with your lower back than the rest of us.

I'd consult a physical therapist that knows a thing or two about lifting to get a better opinion.
