I've been to like 4 gyms and i noticed that the people who could lift a lot or were actually muscular wore converse shoes. It's like a universal thing. Is it because of the flat bottom? I wear basketball shoes and now i'm concerned if they aren't the best lifting shoes. What shoes do you guys wear?

pretty much what was said, flat sole - more natural, although in reality barefoot is the best for deads and squats. Also, there is no cushion so you don't lose any force your body puts out, it goes straight through the floor. An opposite to that would be nike shox where you can lose alot of force because its being absorbed through the shoxs.

They're flat, that's why.
I prefer squatting and deadlifting in my socks though.
Even during a competition I always wear deadlift socks instead of shoes.

Because of the flat sole, it makes sense for deadlift but I don't understand how someone uses it for squats, need a wooden oly heel for them, even though I'm flexable enough to go barefoot.
