Superficial Subcutaneous Fat: From Identification to Elimination...
It turns out there are two different compartmets of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in the abdominal region; i.e. superficial SAT (SSAT) and deep SAT (DSAT). SSAT is the fat found just beneath the skin and above the abdomin, while DSAT is found underneath the abdominal muscle and above the peritoneal cavity where visceral adipose is commonly found.
According to study done on rates of lipolysis in both forms of SAT (Monzon et al 2002) it was concluded to SSAT is not correlated with insulin resistence (IR), while it's counterpart DSAT along with VAT, are strongly associated with IR. Earlier work (Kelley et al 2000), also supporting this assesment, elaborates some on the properties of SSAT. The purpose of this short essay is to expound on the properties, and what can be done to manipulate and even eradicate SSAT from one's abdominal region.
As mentioned SSAT is purported to be a weak indicator of SSAT. However, SSAT is said to be have a strong relation to plasma leptin and for this reason is likened unto SAT commonly found in the thigh region (Kelley et al). Moreover, it also seems that woman tend to have larger amounts of SAT in general, including SSAT.
The reason I researched this was to determine how to increase lipolysis in SAT, and it turns out that my real issue lies within SSAT, not DSAT. So, would topicals and/or injections be more feesible for this type of fat seeing as how they are used in woman to treat SSAT in this thigh region?
Also, since SSAT has shown much lower rates of lipolysis, how do we presume this fat leaves; via hysrolysis, beta oxidation? Moreover, becuase of the lower rate of lipolysis in SSAT, is it also plausible that SSAT adipocytes contain lower levels of triglycerides and more water/glycogen? Or, should we assume their are lower amount of b-andrenoceptors and higher amounts of a-andrenoceptors which are known to have an antilipolytic effect?
My only helpful thought here:
Topical creams wouldn't be a wise choice, as they're highly ineffective and simply marketed to women/consumers who don't know any better. They will not increase fat loss.
