Those Pro-Palestine protests at universities are going to get out of hand

The entire BDS movement is wild to me. Companies on their list like Google, Amazon, Intel, Apple , Hewlett Packard, etc… are essentially in every person’s 401k and every ETF these universities own. Getting universities to cut all ties, direct and indirect, with Israel is not going to happen, so these kids are protesting for something that will never happen and they themselves have most likely benefited from for a very long time.

Middle East aside, I've always found it amusing to see people protesting corporate capitalism, Big Oil, Big Pharma, military industrial production, and the like. They when you ask them, "Do you have a 401k?" "Of course," they say. "Have you looked at the individual corporation breakdown of your mutual funds?" Most will say, "Oh no, I let the investment experts handle that."

In most cases, these activists are profiting from the very things they are protesting against.

Quite probably, I'm not up to speed on US politics or what's happening in the US, so happy to be corrected/advised. While there are some pro Palestinian demonstrations (which aren't exactly anti Israeli, but it can be hard to distinguish that) I don't think it's in the same scale as US from what you're showing in this thread. I don’t know this person and maybe she is what you say she is. I did a google search and I disagree but I could be wrong. But I do know people who are in a similar situation and have spent a good bit of their life fighting for things they believe in. It happens. Yes they are left, libertarian, anarchist, whatever, they see a different world than you. Doesn’t mean they are a paid actor or that they are mentally unwell.

Yes, I criticize people like this because she questions the validity of nothing and accepts every new hoax and warped interpretations of current events that the far-left cooks up. It is fine to be concerned about the environment and the cyclical changing of the climate, but to think it is all the result of man and that man can reverse it without the major powers contributing, gutting our energy resources and economy, is a little over the top. If he is talking about what happened at UNC-CH, I live within walking distance to where they are protesting. I’ve been down there a few times ( only as a curiosity, no interest in being involved as Soros doesn’t pay enough these days), so I’ll see what I can do.

Police say they found what they described as makeshift weapons inside the library. Allen described balloons filled with paint, bamboo sticks and a “bucket of ball bearings.” Allen said officers couldn’t be sure what each item’s intended use was, but noted a spray bottle full of ink had a note attached saying it was “supposed to be deployed at officers.”

Here in Chapel Hill the protest had been peaceful for days because there had been dialogue. After initially putting up tents, protesters asked for a meeting with the chancellor to take them down. The chancellor met with them. He and other administrators were in dialogue with them. They had taken the tents down (which is what they needed to do to avoid running afoul of university policy)

For whatever reason on Sunday the tents went back up- which is what brought the initial police response. Then, after the initial bout of arrests and clearing of their encampment they returned and took down the US flag and replaced it with a Palestinian flag. Added to that the flags in NC at the time were flying half-mast to honor four officers killed in Charlotte. These people are making it really easy to dislike them.

I haven’t seen any statement from the protestors but I’m guessing the escalation was likely due to folks who weren’t in the initial protest and most likely not affiliated with the university.

They link the two because it is about virtue signaling. I figured you'd picked up on that when you rightly observed that the entire divestment premise was pragmatically impossible -- they want to put on an impressive display of virtue, but I guarantee you that not a single one of them would give up their iPhones or live with the real consequences of what they advocate. Although the oppressor/oppressed narrative leads to the path of righteousness and standing against the oppressors will carry you to the gates of heaven -- nothing will swing open those pearly gates like also being a member of an oppressed group yourself. This is why you get things like "queers for Palestine". I think deep down you know this.
