Ricky Gervais or Steve Carell?
And why?
My opinion:
Gervais' writing is superior, as most UK comedy (US sitcoms run for too long and always end up cringey), but Carell's performance can't be beaten. If Carell hadn't starred in it, it would be unwatchable (as proven after he left the show).

I prefer UK version by quite a lot, obviously im somewhat biased.
However, for a UK audience the UK version is slightly more subtle in its humour, which i think is more paleatable for us here, and it's more relatable since it's more like a UK office environment (again obviously this won't be the same for ameribrahs). To me Us office is an entertaining show, but UK office is a top 20 or so comedy of 'all time'.
Also, the first 2 seasons of office US are basically an inferior copy of office UK. US office caught it's stride and became better and its own thing when it stopped trying to copy the UK office storylines

US version is a great show. It has a bit of everything-laughs, romance, cringe, character development, etc.
But then I watched the UK version. It definitely feels more real and has better acting. It has more memorable scenes. It's shorter and has a better ending (The Christmas Special).
The US version feels way more soapy in comparison. Lots of overacting. Characters jump the shark and eventually become cartoon caricatures by the end of the show. But it's still a decent show.
I honestly feel like everyone should watch the UK version if you haven't already. It's not that long anyways.

IMO the Christmas special ending is the only thing the UK office did wrong. It was great without the happy ending, because the bleak and hopeless feeling of the show is what set it apart from the goofy feel-good writing in US sitcoms. The US version ended up completely ruining the characters by the end, because everyone needed to liked by the audience even if they're not likable characters, and everything needs to have a happy ending just for the sake of it. The UK ending with Tim and Dawn was so last minute in the show it didn't offer anything to the script except a tacky "aww it all worked out after all". Wish they hadn't bothered.
