The biggest difference I see between the BLM protests this summer and the Jan. 6Th protest is the direction of organization.

The BLM protests were bottom up. Sure, there were lots of politicians and influencers who reacted to what was going on and espoused their support or even chose to participate. But at it's core, this summer's BLM movement was a coalescence of a shared feeling, a shared anger, about the way things are. That anger was driven by three things: videos of George Floyd being killed followed by stories and videos of similar incidents; personal direct experiences of systemic racism and police misconduct; and (perhaps most importantly) the way police responded to the initial anger and protests.

The January 6th incident was top down. Powerful people with a goal in mind - to either keep President Trump in power or win the support of his followers - chose an impactful date, and sent out emails and texts and phone calls to millions of people, encouraging them to show up. They went on TV and posted to Twitter and ******** and Parler and claimed that democracy itself was under attack. That if people didn't do something, America would fall. That their only choice was to fight. That dark forces had literally cheated and stolen an election. People showed up, willing to do what was being asked of them, and then those powerful leaders told them what to do. Told them to March to the capital, to show strength, to save America by whatever means necessary.

So what of the more nefarious actors in the midst of each scenario?

In the case of BLM, you can say "I support the movement but not the looting" with a straight face because it's not a "looting is good" movement. It's a "please stop killing black people" movement. But I am not sure you can support the Jan 6th protest but not the part where they tried to interfere with democracy, because it was a "let's interfere with democracy" protest.

It's unfair to say, "People shouldn't protest systemic racism because those protests sometimes lead to looting." People have the right to protest when they think something is wrong, and people who get violent merely for self-enrichment should be condemned and punished.

But it's completely fair to say "The president, Republican leaders, and media personalities shouldn't schedule, support, and direct a protest that leads to the capitol being stormed." Because in that case it was the organizers who were out for self-enrichment. And without the words and claims of those leaders, few people would have been upset enough about anything to make a trip to DC, much less get violent.

BLM protests are a reaction to the actions of police and the experiences of people of color. The Jan. 6th protest was a reaction to the claims of those who would benefit from the protest.

The difference is not that looting and property damage is good and insurrection is bad. It's that looting is an unfortunate side effect, and insurrection was the point.

It was the most ingenious concept ever introduced into the world of fast food. Some stuff you want to be hot (e.g. the beef) and some stuff you want to be cold (e.g. lettuce, tomato, onion, etc.). The problem is that when you mush them all together into a wrapper, heat transfers and you get a lukewarm burger. How to solve this intractable problem? Put the cold stuff in one container and put the hot stuff in another container -- with each container separated by a styrofoam bridge. You could then assemble your burger and enjoy a hot patty and cold lettuce and tomatoes. But...they cancelled it. In addition to the aforementioned life and death debates over cheese placement, McDonald's discontinued it because the excessive packaging was considered an environmental hazard. Personally, I'd rather have a hole in the ozone than a lukewarm cheeseburger.

I am not in the mood to argue the benefit of protests but as someone who has been to quite a few in my lifetime I will give you an idea of what you are missing.


Right wing gun protests:

Exclusively 20 year olds or 65 year olds, no in between. 95 percent of the crowd is white, and 80 percent of those are wearing camo. Some of the older crowd are minorities, Hispanics, Asians, African Americans, and they clearly know more about guns and are more serious about this than anyone else, but they're quiet about it. They're also much better dressed.

There are people trying to sell bumper stickers or water bottles or hats and stuff. Nothing is for free.

Everyone gets into either minivans or giant pickup trucks and leaves at the end of the day. Some of the pickup trucks have blatant white nationalist messaging on them, but since they weren't vocal about it during the actual rally nothing usually happens. Old timer gun rights people f*cking hate those guys, since they've been circlejerking about WWII their entire lives, younger gun rights people worryingly don't mind those guys, since they've been circlejerking about WWII their entire lives.

Police just don't really interact and watch from a distance. Protesters ignore the police.

Everyone goes home by nightfall.



Left wing protests:

Mostly 15-35 year olds. Anyone older than 35 is generally either gay, a teacher, or an old Martin Luther King era badass.

The crowd is about 60 percent white , 30 percent black and 10 percent other. Everyone is super vocal, and many are trying to start chants and only a few of them stick. There is always someone there with their small kids, who gets told to take their kids home.

There are people running around obsessively handing out water bottles and dropping gallon jugs of milk at key points to help fight against tear gas. During COVID, there are people running around with gloves, massive amounts of hand sanitizer, and replacement masks, and they will direct the crowd to remove people if they aren't wearing a mask. Everything is for free.

Police have usually already set up three lines of defense, and are intimidating people with riot shields and blue line flag masks or sometimes even signage, from across the no man's land. When there's a lull in the protest, sometimes protesters and cops will make small talk, but then like fifteen minutes later there screaming again. Then the flashbangs and teargas start.

Most of the college students and older, wiser people leave by nightfall, and the anarchist wannabes start showing up around dusk. During daylight hours, if one of them tries instigating unplanned sh*t, they get forcibly removed, but they take advantage of the nighttime where that's easier, and the willingness of the average nighttime protester to do bad sh*t is higher than the willingness of the daytime protester. Also, the cops are consistently bigger *ssholes overnight.

When people leave, they leave by public transportation.

Reading that was like watching one of those classic films like Doctor Zhivago or some $hit.

It was beautiful and yet tragic. I was so rooting for the cold side to be unshackled from the hot stuff, and liberated. Well, at least to the other side of the patty(s).
