We need funding in the inner city school systems. They've been stripping education funding from inner cities regularly. My parents had to send me to the suburbs for my education because the inner city school i was supposed to go to was a chit hole with a 40% graduation rate (high school mind you).

Education only works if the black community has the resources, facilities, and home structure that is conducive for learning. Also the education has to shift from liberal arts to practical skills which will give the youth employable skills. Too many kids come from broken homes or struggling families making it very hard for them to focus in school and many of these kids have to work to support their families. If schools offered technical courses, vocational training, employable skills training, you'll see a dramatic change in the opportunities for black youth in particular but that won't happen because armchair academics insist that liberal arts education is superior and that the goal of every student is to go to college.

You have to want to go to college and be motivated for it. I grew up poor, had no financial assistance, and worked my butt off to get where I am today. If I can do it then its possible for others to do the same.

Completely free college is just not a good idea due to strains on the system and people going for worthless art degrees. It's simple, you need discipline and structure in your life to succeed and getting free money promotes neither of those two.

While I don't disagree that education is the best way to lift people up societally, we have statistics that paint a clear image. Throwing money at the situation doesn't help as Milwaukee School District has made that abundantly obvious. Milwaukee isn't just an outlier. If you bring up the per pupil expenditures from inner city locations and compare it with the graduation rate, you'll see that even though more money is actually spent in inner cities per puil, the drop out rate is significantly higher than locations where less money is spent.

Due to these statistics, I really don't believe it's a lack of money issue. ****ty teachers, lack of discipline/encouragement at home...I don't have the answer but I am confident that throwing more money at the situation isn't the solution.

It sounds like you were lucky to have involved parents that took education seriously which probably played a huge roll in your success.

There are laws that quite literally require them to be considered over higher quality candidates. That is incredible on its face when you say it out loud.

Do we need a more hands-off approach? Do we just truly subsidize their entire lives in hopes that the drug crime and violence stops once scarcity is removed? How do we help them succeed? I am just not seeing that in the Cards for them. While acknowledging that the Misc is not a good cross section of society, one can assume that the self-apologizing, fatalistic, hyper-defensive, victim behavior displayed here is some indicator of the aggregate. That is fuking terrifying. The logic chains of their reasoning is terrifying if in their hearts they truly, truly believe what they post.

Sometimes the square block simply does not fit into the circle hole. I've had beloved team members that came aboard highly decorated but the fit wasn't right and so they left the company. The fit is not right here. This was a failed experiment.
