I say pee-can. Not sure if it’s family or Canada.
****ing **** storm after **** storm, boys. We have a pandemic in a pandemic at the farm I work at. Horses are dropping like flies. Been the most facked up thing I’ve ever seen. They go from normal, to a bit of a crusty nose to paralyzed in 6-10 hours. It’s been horrifying to watch.Squats and Maple syrup son. Squats and Maple syrup.

Yes, it’s the neurological strain of equine herpes. BUT, they are saying it’s a super strain, and they’ve never seen anything like it. Horses get shipped to the Ontario Vet College when they get it but we have to catch it fast enough. Which is damn near impossible because even when they are there, showing ALL the signs, they are testing negative. It’s like, they have to be basically paralyzed to test positive. And yeah, they get paralyzed and then have to be put down. What’s really weird is that after they had been put down, a few hours later, two of them started bleeding out of the nose. How does blood pump out of the nose with no blood pressure? It’s been so ****ed.
As for stalls/tools/buckets etc... we are doing everything. We have a danger zone and the horses do not leave their stalls. Everything is sprayed with hospital grade verkon multiple times a day. We have foot dip buckets everywhere, all “sick tools” stay in the sick zone and are verkoned multiple times but so are the safe zone ones. We verkon all handles, stalls, chains, the entire floor... everything. The horses are on automatic watering bowls and no one moves stalls anyway. No one enters the sick zone until they are done with all other things in the safe zone. I’ve been working everyday since it started and it’s insanity. We’ve had 4 die and 5 are at OVC not getting better but not dead either, so I guess that’s good. The 3 that died couldn’t walk so we couldn’t get them on the trailer to go to OVC.
We have done 4 rounds of testing in 10 days. Only 4 have come back positive out of the 30 horses and all those 4 are still alive. It’s killing the horses 10 and up.Squats and Maple syrup son. Squats and Maple syrup.

Sounds crazy but honestly? No one seems to know wtf this IS. The horses ARE testing positive for EHV sometimes but a lot of inconclusive tests are happening too. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they were testing the samples for some connection to covid. Everyone looked ok today so hopefully it’s almost over...

That’s exactly why it makes no sense that no one has answers. This isn’t new to the horse world. The research has been going on for decades. So why doesn’t anyone seem to know wtf is going on, including the Ontario Vet College, where allllllll the horses go when **** hits the fan, they need surgery, etc etc? Why can’t anyone answer the questions? EHV can be deadly but it’s not usually like this. This is EHV n crack.
And thanks guys. It’s been rough. I’m glad that I don’t know these horses and barely know the family (only been there since March 7) or I’d be right ****ed.Squats and Maple syrup son. Squats and Maple syrup.
