It's a "Passing" lane, plain and simple.

I never knew this. What about turning left? I have never heard of this and my family tends to drive well above the speed limit. When we complain about people being in the left lane it is only in regard to highways.

Upon further research it is only illegal to be in the left lane and not passing on an expressway in my state. But it is courteous to be in the right lane if going the speed of traffic.

Left lane for passing only is a common state law. I was on a highway in Texas with signs posted everywhere recently. Watched a trooper stopping someone outside of DFW for this. Move over if you're in the fast lane.

For most it's always been an unwritten rule, many states have made
it law as it's illegal to pass on the right. Even if you're doing 150 in the
"fast" lane...if you're not passing someone, you don't belong in it. Most of
the road-rage type sh!t I see is because of just that, some stubborn fool

The left lane on a highway is the passing lane. It's as simple as that. If you're in it, you should be passing people. If you're not, you need to be in one of the middle lanes or the right lane. Doing this keeps the flow of traffic going, which helps to mitigate traffic congestion. It's surprising that this is such an unheard of concept to some people.

If you want the rules changed, write or petition your government. In the meantime, pay attention to the signs that say "slow traffic keep right."

If im not overtaking i get back in the correct lane.

If i find myself in the overtaking lane and notice someone coming behind me i move over and let them pass.

If im overtaking then i get in the overtaking lane and pass.
