feeling disconnected from one's physicality; feeling as though one is not completely occupying the body; not feeling in control of one's speech or physical movements; feeling detached from one's own thoughts or emotions; a sense of automation, going through the motions of life but not experiencing it or participating in it; loss of conviction with one's identity; feeling a disconnection from one's body; inability to accept one's reflection as one's own; difficulty relating oneself to reality and the environment; feeling as though one is in a dream; and out-of-body experiences.

02-20-2014, 02:50 PM #40Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

He's wrong about meditation/mindfulness practice. It's most difficult when you are in rough spots, but it actually makes all the difference in the world with effort.
A lot of depersonalization/derealization is just the fallout of drug use/extreme stressors on your psyche/self-image/worldview. You need to see what your mind is doing before you anything can change.not srs

This.
I first started feeling this before I took any psychoactive drugs (Inc. caffeine/coffee). I started feeling it when I was younger and my world views did not align with what was actually happening in reality, and there was some dissonance with how everything actually worked vs how I thought it worked.
It was scary, weird feeling for a young person (Talking 13-16Years).
It gets worse with any sort of psychoactive drug use. Disconnects you further. Gets worse when you are depressed, bored and over analyze everything.
I feel like its a psychological self defense mechanism gone wrong or something.

When I was severely depressed in high school I felt entirely detached from myself. Looked in the mirror and didn't recognize myself. Felt really phucked, felt like a zombie. Not sure if it's the same as this but it wasn't fun. Fine now but thinking back on it, it was quite scary.
Now I'm on a roll with this type of hip hop haha

So basically people with depersonalization disorder feel emotionally numb all the time, and they lack motivation? Maybe I'm just being stupid here, but it really doesn't sound like a big deal at all and certainly not something anyone should medicate for. I'm going to look into it some more. I must be missing something.
