Then you two are the biggest suckers in the world if you were ever paying more for an apartment than for a mortgage (unless you had some super decked out penthouse players palace which I know neither of you did). The most I've ever paid for rent on a 1 bdrm apartment was $650 a month, a cheap mortgage around here would be $800-$900 a month. So unless you live in Manhattan, I have a hard time believing you paid much more. If it were generally true, then everyone in the world, barring bad credit, would just go buy a house and save hundreds a month. But that doesn't happen, because its not generally true.

You're cute, Zak. The reason most people don't go out and just buy houses is they don't have the credit to get a reasonable rate, resulting in a payment less than rent would be for a comparable sized place.
Stenny, I only have a 45lb dumb ell at my desk.
Hish, I just get paid what my hourly rate would work out to, not time and a half

Well I guess I just fail at life. BRB going to buy a 4 bdrm house for $200 month since their all over the place apparently.
And Stender, you must not know how to read, I said the most I'VE PAID, not the most expensive there are period. There are plenty of 1 bdrm apartments that are over $1000 a month around here. It's not that the bike itself is dangerous, it's that people are never checking for bikes around them, will put bikers in danger on a whim, and there's no margin of error in an accident.
I got T boned going 30 through an intersection by a GMC Jimmy back in '08. I ended up flying into the guardrail on the freeway on ramp. I didn't have a bump or bruise to show for it. Now if that same Jimmy slams into me while I'm on a Kawasaki...that becomes a very different story.Near, far, wherever you are...

If only I could rent one....
JB in your example you paid 650 just for rent for an apt half the size of my house with no ability to get back any $$$ back on your investment.
I pay 580s for my house payment and that is on a 100k+ house that was turn key. Not even a cheap fixer upper like ftw is getting. Always better to own.

I have several friends who own houses around $100k, and all of them are paying over $800 a month, so thats what I'm basing my knowledge off of. I've never seriously looked into owning a home, so I don't know the ins and outs of mortgages. All I know is I pay $525 a month for rent, and if I were to buy a house, I'm assuming I'd be paying $800+ a month. Maybe you guys just all have phenomenal credit and my friends don't. Either way I'm done with this convo since I've been througoughly owned in every way.

Well there are multiple factors. One is don't count the escrow since it is for taxes and insurance. Second loan length. Third interest rate.
I mean if I wasn't planning to stay somewhere very long then I wouldn't buy a house...but even if I decide I want to move I can sell the house and move. Normally you don't lose $ on a house either...but in today's market no clue.

When you setup a mortgage you can also create an escrow which basically is an additional monthly amount set aside to make a lump payment on your behalf for insurance and taxes.
For example in my case I pay 140 a month into my escrow so that at the end of the year my taxes and insurance get paid by the mortgage company from that escrow. My parents though do not have an escrow so they are given their bills directly and pay out of pocket.
