Dress nicely. A suit never hurts, but don't feel like you have to wear one. Just don't roll in with khakis and a polo or something. Nice slacks and a button down shirt/tie would be acceptable.
Be prepared to answer questions like "why do you want to be a firefighter with LA county?"..."what is your opinion of what being a firefighter entails?"...stuff like that.

2rude knows his stuff.
If you get in tight with LA county you might be able to get some of the questions, at least what were asked on previous oral boards. Dress professional, utilize all of your time, shake hands and introduce yourself with everyone on the board and thank them when you are finished, sit on the edge of your chair and have good posture (this will display confidence), and make eye contact with each and every board member during your replies. There are a few different methods on how to answer these questions spend some time searching on google and find one that fits your style. Ex.
Here are some more questions...
"why do you want to be a firefighter with LA county?
"what is your opinion of what being a firefighter entails?"
"What have you done to prepare for the job of a firefighter"
"Tell us about a time you were faced with a challenge and state what you did you overcome this challenge"
"what are the challenges of the job and how do you plan on overcoming them?"
"Diversity is important in the fire service, define diversity and state why you think it is important."
"New emergencies are constantly being presented to the fire service. What are these emergencies and how will you adapt to the change?"
"This job is stressful. What are the stresses of the job and how will you overcome them?"
"Safety is paramount in this industry. How will you ensure a safe career?"I ask not for a lighter burden, I ask for broader shoulders

Started Fire 1 last Monday. I am literally the only student who is not already hired onto a department!

New Probie cooked an Italian stew it was good.
Feels good!!
First shift off probation second shift with our new probie and get a fully involved garage fire 200 ft from the station. I was engineer that day got stuck on the panel first fire pumping, first fire for our new engine, first fire for a new officer, first fire for our probie, and first of the year. Good times! Lots of ice cream to be had.
Hey guys also just want to put this out there. Came across a great product that us as Firefighters can benefit from. Basically condensed fruits and veggies 26 servings in a day. It has me eating better, feeling better, sleeping better and recovering from workouts better. Now that I am done cutting we will see how it effects the gainz train already PR'd some of my lifts. If you guys would like some more details on it. Message me.R.I.P. Hela

Second part Yeah I know. I feel like those people always trying to sell crap that I don't want. Im just super impressed with this stuff and feel bad not sharing information with people that could benefit from it.
Now as for the Irish Whiskey. I'm down. Have you tried the Jameson Casked?R.I.P. Hela

Any firefighters from ontario?..
More specifically toronto?..I have some questions..
Ive been looking at some course that I can take that will prepare me to be a firefighter..
But the thing is.. the main requirements to be a firefighter is 20/30 "uncorrected" vision..My vision was less than 20/20 the last time I checked.. (years ago)..
So is there any way around that?..can I still become a firefighter?
Thanks.Doordasher crew (SRS)

3 years of working nights and finally made a decision to go to day work. Any suggestions on dealing with day walkers? Going back to a city truck, heart of downtown, and one of the busiest in the system. I'm looking forward to it.
Also debating on applying for the in house medic program. Handful of medics have mentioned I should do it. Running 911 BLS is fun though.EMT crew/Murphy's Law gang.

Go for it man. If they're going to pay for your medic school, no reason not to. BLS is fine and all, but I got bored of it pretty quickly. It's lower stress, but I really didn't feel challenged at all. It's nice to run some critical ALS patients from time to time, I feel like I'm making more of a difference and I get to think outside of the box a little bit.
Like, just night shifts? Or 24 hour shifts?
I love shift work, but I couldn't imagine just working overnights. My sleep schedule is bad enough already. That must wreck you.

I guess it's just me being irritated that they are probably spending at least 15 million dollars system with just on signs, advertising and uniforms and we'll be the one department that doesn't get straight answers as to what's going on. Also, DOH will become a pain in the butt when the do random inspections, which they do every day. We are the only department in the system that has their own Human Resource department, just weird.
Well don't do 24 shifts here. Back when I did nights I did 6pm-6am twice a week and 2 daytime 8 hour shifts. Back then we were also allowed to pick individual shifts and keep that schedule as long as we wanted and they put out shift bids every few months that went based of seniority. Now we put together 40 hour weekly blocks that have specific shifts together and we pick every year. I'm really particular about what medic partner I work with and have been working with the same medic for a few years so I pick a 4 day work week all days shifts. 12, 12, 8, 8. Night shifts do mess with my sleep way to much, but I've been off them for maybe 6 years now.Last edited by MrM27; 01-20-2016 at 04:04 AM.

Can someone explain to me how fire academies work? Are they only for new hires? What do you get out of them? Fire 1, 2, HM and a cert? What is the difference from just taking F12 and HM at a community college?
Sorry, I am not entirely familiar with the different typed of fire service education and training. I want to go career so I'm putting myself through Fire 1, 2, and HM out of pocket. I'd like to get some volunteer service under my belt but the local department isn't hiring right now. Does anyone have some input on what I can do to expedite my process of going career? I'll be taking EMT in the Fall. I'm considering pursuing a Fire Science degree to give me that edge over other applicants. I've been in the MN National Guard for four years now, and I've been told that the military experience is helpful.
I guess I'm just looking for input or guidance"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Typically they are the same. Many local colleges just call it their fire academy. Individual departments sometimes host their own academy which is basically an orientation, if the new hire is required to be certified already. If the new hire needs no experience/certs than the department academy will provide those as well as the orientation portion.
Also be aware that some smaller non-accrediated schools that are just fire/ems schools do not transfer to college credit. This can make it a little more difficult to obtain fire science or EMS degrees further down the road.Millecor Sponsored Athlete

Thanks for the information. I know a guy who's a fire medic but I wouldn't say we're friends. I also have a brother in-law who's a fire fighter in Missouri (1,500 miles away). Other than that, I don't have any direct connections with the local fire department. I guess I'll just be a bad ass and be the top of everything.
:D
