Yeah, what is the deal with that!! One time, I sat down next to a lady who switched from the adductor the abductor and I got on the adductor. She blatantly stared at me while I adjusted the weight (to twice more than what she was lifting) and then WATCHED me do a set or 2 with a mean mug before just walking away. Honestly, I'm just bigger than her so I don't know why she would be surprised/upset that I could lift more than she did. Or why she would even care in the first place.
Personally when I see chicks kicking ass in the gym, I may watch them, but in awe! It just inspires me to train harder so I can get on their level lol. But some women just see everything as competition. I hate to admit it, but if it goes on long enough during a session, it brings my focus down and messes my workout up. That's why I love when there are hardly any females in the gym.

Oops! That quote accidentally ended up in my response... BUT all-dog bob-sledding??? Where does it take place? Seems a riot!
Agreed... I'm 8 months preggo and now I REALLY wish there were more women there. Not gonna lie, I'm pretty intimidated being pregnant, lifting in "the mens section" especially since my dr adviced I'm not to lift more than 15lbs. Never cared before though. *sigh* <waddles back to the eliptical>.

I've only noticed the looks that seem like they are mentally comparing me between them. To be honest, as long as no one interrupts my workout, I don't really care what other people are doing or thinking. I do agree that probably some of the women at gyms do try to stare others down in a female macho "I'm better than you" look. Forget those women, you're time at the gym is worth more than their egos.

No, I don't think you're being rude.
Not all of this is directed to the original poster. A few more have chimed in with the same concern.
You're right she did say she smiles back.
She also said it happens "every workout by more than one chick." This speaks volumes and is narcissism at its finest.
If you are getting scowled at every single workout by numerous chicks maybe, just maybe, you're the one with the problem.
Shoe on the other foot: If I got a "mean mug" at the gym, I would still go introduce myself and take it from there. If the response is not welcoming, then I know it's not about me. I've done everything I can to be friendly.
Kapish?

I used to get gawked at all the time when I went to a public gym. Sometimes it was meanmugs and sometimes there was a smile. I genuinely didn't give a f***, because I was throwing around some heavy ass weight. But now that I don't do that anymore, because I simply can't, it does at times make me wonder the following.
Do I smell?
Am I not doing something correctly?
Did I not wipe down my previous machine?
Do I have something on my face?
We are in the gym to make ourselves look better, and like it or not, if you are single, you will be miring someone in there. You can't help it. We aren't machines. There will always be a quest for acceptance, and whether or not it is clouded with a perception of badassery, it still exsists.

At 47 years old you should already have your life set. You expect nothing, and you shouldn't be getting anything from anyone else. Those of us that still have our lives left to live, look for things to happen. It all starts with eye contact. A meanmug, an interested look, a size up from someone, a scoff.........
