for everyone working 70-80 hours a week i really hope you are making at least $100,000/yr (srs)
think about your hourly rate. say at even $80,000 a year if you were doing 80 hours a week (ill give you the benefit of 2 weeks vacation) then your hourly earn is $20/hr (not counting other benefits)
plus once you factor in long commute times and other misc things it goes down even more,
is it really worth it? why make all that $$ and have no time to spend it?

In the summer of '08 I took a construction/dock job in a small town called Naknek, Alaska. We worked and maintained a spot that housed the fishermen. It was May 15-July 31st. We had free housing/food, but had to work 7:30am-8:30 PM EVERY DAY, with the exception of getting of at 5pm of the 4th of July. After 1-2 months of this it makes you literally go crazy. I tried to get fired without going to jail, but couldn't do it. Went as far as taking beer to work and pounding them in front of the boss, but they still wouldn't send me home. It was a small island, so was no way off until the job ended. 77 hour work weeks for 10 weeks was bad enough for me, I feel bad to the people on here talking about working more, if they are true.

I have a giant cooler at my desk - I have all of my protein shakes, food and water in there. If I ever take a lunch hour, I usually spend it doing errands. I tend to take longer lunch breaks and cut back on my hours when I'm between projects.
I work for a company with about 300+ employees, but my workload is pretty self-contained. I have two titles - one involves analyzing financial data vs. financial quotes, and the other involves Inventory Control. I actually kind of like the niche I've cut out for myself, when you consider the following:
*I never have to interact with any customers. I just work with data and physical inventory.
*I don't even have a phone at my desk; nor do I need one.
*I don't have any sort of set hours - just need to put in a minimum of eight on weekdays.
*I can take lunch whenever I want, or I can walk out into the warehouse - never really "stuck" in the office.
*I have two "supervisors," but since I am literally one of only two people in the entire company who knows how to navigate the inventory software, I don't really have to answer to anyone very often.
I'm the type of guy who is extremely self-motivated, so when I'm given the freedom to be as productive as I want to be - I tend to want to work a lot more.
If I ever run a company, I'll set it up so that no one has any sort of set schedule - people can come and go as they please. Obviously, not everyone will be able to handle such a system, but I think people would work harder if you tied earnings to results - instead of locking people in for a set (prison or school) schedule and giving them 5% raises every two years.Photo Log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=140023453 (with pics of me in my underwear!!!)

Welcome to the club.
I work anywhere from 50 to 70 hours a week depending on my workload. I'm running 2 businesses, both of which are going through really busy periods right now.
Important thing is to manage time effectively. I can still spend an hour or so each night and a few hours over the weekend with fiancee/kid and still hold down that ridiculous workload... one thing that suffers is my gym routine, e.g. hard to nail down the right time to go since my workload is all over the place.
Just part of starting/running a business! But if you're not getting paid to work that extra 30 hours (over the standard 40 or whatever a normal week is there) then I'd say it's time to find a new job, or demand a fat pay raise and bonus.Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.

My normal schedule is 7-5, but I rarely ever work my normal schedule. It's usually 7-7+.
For one I really enjoy my job and two I love my paychecks. I don't get paid salary so that's another plus.
Feels good to have money in my pocket and buy things that I wasn't able to when I was a broke ass college kid.
My weekdays are just as you described: eat, work, gym, sleep, and repeat. Weekends are a different story: surf, club, bar, paintballing, skydiving, scuba diving, travelling, vegas, video games, hanging out, movies, cycling, working on my car/motorcycle, etc. are just an example of things I've done this summer.
I was told by one of my older co-workers (50+) to take advantage of the days I don't work especially when I'm young cuz when I'm old like him the only thing you're body will want to do on a day off is rest lol. I've been taking his advice so far and its been workin out great.

what do you do? you dont know how lucky you are having access to all those things on the weekend. i would kill to live in California. Im in supposedly the most cosmopolitan city in the world and if its not museums, eating out and clubbing there's **** all here, and its at least an hour's journey to get anywhere else of interest.
when you start out you put in the big hours and dont get paid much. you have to put your time in, then eventually it reverses and you get paid a ton for not very much work.Soon to be updated:

yeah, I may have to agree with this.
sure its commendable that you can actually do it, but when you get to a point that you can't even even breathe and there are days where you'd never see daylight (0700-1900?) you may need to re-evaluate.
I'm serious, what are you doing it for?
-Are you just trying to work extra hours so you can buy expensive stuff.
-Do you like to live outside your means and in order to maintain it you have to work these slave like shifts?
-or are you doing it to simply keep a roof over your head?
I would be willing to search for a lower paying job with reasonable hours, if it meant having more free time.....in your case not "more" free time, just free time. I'm doing roughly 40/week and I have no idea where the time went, Think about it. Wednesday is September 1st 2010! I don't even remember what I was doing between March and June.

I know a few people who have done the same whilst at city law firms, like wise some of the guys who went to the big banks. They earn a fair bit, but don't have much of an opertunity to spend it. They all used to keep spare wardrobs at work!
I regularly worked 50 plus hours a week when I was down in London and to be honest it wasn't for me. I took a very slight pay cut, sold my flat, and moved to Edinburgh. My quality of life has improved no end. I live a 15 minuite cycle from work, normaly in the office 8:30 to 6ish. Out of the office at least one day a week. Lots of long lunches. But it's taken me a while to get here.
Thinking of jacking it all in and starting up by myself though, which i expect will be even more stressful.

Surgeons have this problem. The literally have no life...unless they are on vacation.
They are constantly "on call" we have a series of "accommodations" in our hospital we have rooms with a small TV, a closet, sink, toilet, shower, toiletries, and a mini fridge. There are doctors and surgeons that live in those rooms 24/7 because they can be called for emergencies at any given time (which is usually in the middle of the night)
They can pull about 500-750k/year but you can't even do anything with it, on top of that 25% goes to mal-practice then once the Bush tax cuts expires they'll get raped more than ever before.
Some of these guys go weeks without seeing their families and for what? To spend a two weeks at some overpriced vacation resort?
Its a miserable existence.
