I took the time to write this. If you're interested, take the time to read it. No BS comments. I make $38,000 /year on the side doing this and if I had more time could make $100,000 easy.
I see so many young Miscers looking for info on how to make extra money on the Internet. I could easily write 20 pages on this but here is a general idea. Yes there are many ways to make money on the Internet; some legitimate, some not. Don't waste your time with affiliate marketing, and Adsense BS, here's how you do it:
I have two websites. One makes about $5,000 /month during Sep/Oct - February (extra $30,000 per year). It's a niche product I sell online for about $175 shipped free. I buy said product from a wholesaler for $100 and keep an inventory of about 100 of these at my house at all times. It's a sports related product and I sell a ton of them.
The other website is for another niche product, a gardening product actually. This product I sell for $400 each and buy for $250. This product makes me about $1000 /month profit during the spring-fall months (extra $8,000 per year). This product is great, as it's drop shipped right from the manufacturer. I don't have to do anything except collect money and pass the customer order along to the manufacturer.
So, two website, two products, extra $38,000 /year on top of my full-time IT job. I don't have time right now (busy surfing Misc.) but when I get around to it will start a few more of these websites. Both websites are SEO optimized and rank #1 for their term in Google and Yahoo. The key is to create a website with rich content that sells (Billy Mays style) your one product. And if you can't write, not a big deal. You hire writers at elance.com to do the content for you for $20 /page. Use Paypal as your checkout process as the fees are reasonable and it's easy to set up.
Cliffs:
-Figure out a niche product with a high price and decent margin. You don't want to be shipping out $3 wigits all day long. Make sure your product is sold for less than your competitors. And remember, you're not trying to beat other websites like amazon, etc. selling a million products. You're selling just a couple products.
-SEO is key. You need to rank on the first page of Google and Yahoo for your product. Again, easy to do when you're selling one niche product. Are you going to rank #1 selling Ipods? Not a chance in hell. But you can easily selling $200 cobalt blue african zulu stone necklaces. I'm dead serious, there is a market for everything. You need to find it.
-Create a simple CSS driven website. No fluff, just great marketing copy, crisp clear product images, and easy checkout.
-Great text, marketing copy, and information. If you don't know how to write well, hire someone at elance.com for $20 /page. I didn't write a damn thing for any of my websites, I just didn't have the time.
-Don't let any customers get away. Use free tracking software to your advantage and know where your customers are coming from. If you have a lead or customer question, blow them away with a 30 minute personal response.
-Find inventive ways to get customers to tell friends about your product. Word of mouth is free, and it's amazing who people know. I had one customer who recommended my website to a couple leaders of some clubs. I ended up selling like 200 of my products to two clubs; all from the recommendation of one happy customer.
-Make your website personal. Take your time to have great photos and maybe some videos of someone using your product.
Now I'm not going to tell you what products to sell. I have about 10 in my mind right now that I'll be using within the next year. Once my website are set up, they are basically hands off. One I have to actually ship a product, but the other is literally no work at all.

Dude there is a ton of potential if you made a website. Hire a web designer to make a very professional looking websites showcasing your product, with lots of high-quality pics included. Take a look at top designer clothes and sunglasses sites for ideas. They make their website look as if their product is the best thing you can buy, and if you do the same, your product will look very appealing. I guess I am trying to say -- show confidence in your product on your website. People will want to buy it.

Anyone know the best way to get your website to list higher in search engine results? I've been using a $100 a year fee for search engine submission etc...

This could not be farther from the truth; well at least if you don't count inventory but you can start off really really slow.
-Web Hosting is $6 /month at Host Gator, Blue Host, etc. etc.
-Website design there are thousands of free templates but simple CSS is as easy as it gets
-Pay search engines? Not a chance. Good old organic search results. You can do Adwords if you want, but you don't need to. And as your business grows, so does your advertising buget.
-You need an inventory if you don't drop ship, but you don't need thousands of things. Buy one or two, and if they sell buy more. Remember you're buying things that you know people will buy. Know your market.
Read this FREE guide, it's all you need http://www.google.com/webmasters/doc...rter-guide.pdf
Returns are a hassle, but luckily I don't have too many. I have someone do all my taxes so I don't even deal with that.
LOL think of something you like to do. Maybe a sport, or a hobby and go from there. Or maybe you know someone who makes something, or can source a decent product for you?
I don't use any drop-shipper, 99.9% of them suck. I found a product I wanted to sell and called the Company directly. I told them my plan and asked them if I passed the orders to them would they ship direct as the product is heavy. They said sure, and that was that.

Ok I got like 6 PM's asking me the name of the website and/or the products I sell. I am sorry to disappoint, believe me I'm not frauding but I just don't want to give it out. You could easily find out too much about me from the websites, and quite honesty I'd like to keep my private life private.
I have two kids and I don't do anything online for some jilted person to jeopardize their safety.
As for SEO - NEVER pay anyone for SEO! Just read the free Google guide and create a content rich website with good information. Their is no secret. Anyone can tell a good website from a bad one in like 3 seconds; well so can your customers.
Create a well written, simple, CSS website with good keywords following standard wreb practices. Make sure you title tags are all in order and follow the Google guide. What's good for Google, is normally good for Yahoo, Bing, etc too.

Here is a great question/s someone PM'd me:
Now my question for you is how did you figure out how these niche products would sell?
I had owned one of these things, and it was hard to find in local stores. You pretty much have to go online to find it.
Where did you find them wholesale?
Here's what I did. I bought a few on Amazon at full price and then sold them on Ebay "buy it now" at a 10% discount. Yes, I lost like $20 or whatever. They sold like mad so I called the manufacturer and said; I'd like to resell this product online how much would you sell me 100 for. And they sold them to me for about 1/2 what they were for sale on amazon. So I turned around and sold them for 25% less than what Amazon was selling them for. As I started to sell more and more, I went back to the Company and said, hey how much for 1,000 of these? And the price went lower.
You also stated one website you don't even have to do the shipping, how did you work that out with the wholesaler? What is to prevent your customers from buying it wholesale just like you did?
This product weighs over 100 lbs. and the company already has deals with freight companies. With this product, I'm not offering free shipping. So the company just sends the product out right to the customer. In essence, I'm just the middle man.

Nope, not at all. Ebay is really the best place to gauge the market as it's in real-time. Ebay has a search function that shows you what previous auctions have sold for. So now you can get an idea for the demand of a product, and also what the current market value is. Another great tool is Google search with the recommendations option turned on. From there, you can also get an idea for product demand based on search.
Do you have a hobby, interest, or something else that you use or want that's hard or impossible to find in your local store? Something that's expensive? Doesn't have to be a fortune, but like I said you don't want to spend your whole day shipping things for a 75 cent profit. Nor is it worth any company's time to drop-ship a $5 item for you.
What are some of your interests? Remember you're looking for something that people need. Not a million people, but enough to make you money. You're also looking for something that people can't just walk into their local Wal-Mart and buy. They need to look to the Internet to buy it. And lastly, don't pick some super saturated item like an ipod etc. where your competition is outrageous.
Think outside the box; I know it's a cliche but it works.Last edited by SuperFabulous; 07-14-2009 at 12:10 PM.
