since it was being shadowed by a virtually identical car that had all the parts on it that seem to be missing from the damaged one, and the shadow-car had what may be a dealer sticker on the window
my first thought is maybe some kind of insurance scam

maybe they stripped all of the high-yield parts off of a car that was difficult to sell but they have other identical cars and a market for replacement parts
careful faux-damage on the sheet-metal to simulate explosion
drive it out to the desert / bucket of gasoline will provide believable amount of charring
make one of those "the Americans killed my whole family"- videos and get double-value out of it
