Last year my monthly electric bill for this time of year was $279.
This year it's $1,650.33. For a 33 day cycle.
Called the electric company, went out and read the meter reading for them, charges are legit.
Only change is my Daughter has been home from school and has the washer and electric dryer banging all day, Washer and dryer are not that old so thinking that's not it.
Is there some appliance that can go bad and just suck electricity?
Searched the whole property and there's no grow rooms or BTC mining rigs seriptusciusly tucked away.
Any ideas?

Nobodies power bill should be that much. You have something seriously wrong. I would get the poco(power company) out there and look at their service and down til the line side of meter. Main draws of a residence are: dryer, a/c, heater. Basically all 240v loads. Sounds like a billing issue honestly. Master electrician here btw. Feel free to pm me any questions.

Are you on some sort of peaking system. Certain times of the day you may be on a premium billing period with much higher rates. For example 3 till 7 in the afternoon/evening. So if much of your appliances run during that time its going to be much more money. Maybe your service provider has changed your contract because an older one expired or because of some "Force Majeure" issues.
Ask your neighbors about their bills.
In the summer even with the aircon on, pool pump/heater running and the washing machines going our bill is never even close to thisPlease record my time/reps if I pass out

Jeez something doesn't seem right. I'd suspect a metering issue first, unless you see lightening bolts arcing across your house I'm not sure how your usage could increase that much. My electric bill is usually around $100 and I have an electric dryer GFA furnace. I'd lose my $hit getting an electric bill that high

It's probably the electric clothes dryer that is responsible for the use. I've got about 14 rentals with electric dryers. If some lights, the television and the refridgerator is running; the wheel on the meter probably takes a minute to make a full revolution. But when the electric dryer is on, it makes a full revolution in about 5 seconds.

My friends power bill skyrocketed, and it ended up being the pump in the well having issues .
I borrowed a current clamp from where I used to work . It’s easier to monitor what’s happening as opposed to watching the meter . But you need to clamp the hot wire by itself in order for it to work .
As soon as there was a huge spike in draw we just turned off breakers to isolate it .
Btw , I’m wondering if this higher than normal power bill you got is a one time thing , as it was calculated at the end of the year , and you used more than you normally averaged over the billing period ?Last edited by MajorTendonitis; 01-28-2022 at 11:56 AM.

Instead of unplugging things, just turn off your breakers while someone watches the meter.
This may sound like a silly question, but is someone running window air conditioning units? I've got this 3 story house that sleeps 8. The central air can't keep the whole house cool so I put in some window units. In the winter time it can be 62 degrees downstairs with the gas furnace running, but it can be 72 on the 2nd floor and 82 on the 3rd floor. What do my 'tard tenants do? They run the window air conditioning units in January and February. I'm not complaining, because just one weeks rent covers the utility bills.Funihe renal hoses in Cofevile Kasa. No well here, city water. No it's an actual bill for actual usage, I don't pay an average.
No breakers, fuses, it may come to that but they're not labeled that well so if I pull the right one I still haven't identified the appliance causing the issue. No AC's running, it's 14 degrees here lol.Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

That bill is pure fiction.
We run space heaters, laundry, dishwasher, dehumidifier, fans, electricity is on all night because some people in this house stay up all night, some use power tools, shed lights etc….the laundry is always going…heck I dry my stuff twice! I mean a 300 dollar bill is a lot for us…there’s no way you could do four times what we do."A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. She may be leaving a lot of stuff plugged in that is using electricity even if off. Chargers, computers, etc.
Grab one of these. Test it on anything you typically keep plugged in. Once I found out how much power phone chargers, Playstations, computers, and all the stuff that nobody was using was draining but was still plugged in, I'm now the "plug Nazi" in the house.

Before I even knew my wife, she lived in a house where here gas meter was read with binoculars. It's got about 8 rotary dials with something like a watch arm at each dial. Each dial is about the size of a 25 cent piece. The gas company bungled up her gas meter reading on multiple occasions.

When this first happened I went out and read every dial over the phone to a person at the electric company and she confirmed the charges were correct. Only when a meter reader came out did I get this 3K credit.
I could use that 3k back but at this point I'm leery of messing with it.Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.
