I wouldn't call it amazing either that falls under The Black Halo and Epica but it's still a solid album nonetheless. I think they went back to the basic formula similar to Karma than anything.

But they have a new one coming out can't wait for it.

well not to be a nazi but there is no such thing as melodic metal. it's just not a real term, although i've heard it applied to everything from power metal to death and black metal.

Some old skool Morbid Angel... Several years ago, at a friend's house, we listened to this song while on acid. That underwater effect on the vocals was tripping me out and I looked over at my friend and he started turning greenish/blue and watery lol... Kinda scary, but pretty awesome.
There's definitely a psychedelic quality to this song.

Extreme Metal tends to be a mantle taken up by metal bands who don't like be classified as one specific sub genre of metal.

Most notable band who describes themselves as "extreme metal" would be Cradle of Filth, and that is for the exact reason that they don't want to be classified (especially under the Black Metal category).

Now as for melodic metal. Yes that is a real sub genre.

Melodic Death Metal would probably be the most common.

It is just a sub genre that includes bands with (you guessed it) melodic vocals, or a mixture of melodic and harsh.

Deadlock and Cynic would be good examples of Melodic Death Metal.

and no it's not a real genre...wtf? melodic death and melodic black metal are real genres. "melodic metal" isn't. it tells you absolutely nothing whatsoever. cannibal corpse has melodies. suffocation have songs with lots of melodies. behemoth have some melodic solos.
