Hey guys, what is more important for you guys? Awesome environment or awesome gym?
Ex:
Awesome environment being around positive people, constantly cheering you on and having fun in the process at a powerhouse type of gym. Vs. Being able to train at a powerlifters/weightlifters/strongman's fantasy facility but minus the environment.

Hard for me to think of it in these terms. My two choices were:
1. University gym with a lot of college kids.
2. Powerlifting gym with powerlifters/strongman competitors/bodybuilders.
I actually liked the University gym better. I like working out with other PLers, but I find it difficult because the standard at my local PL gym is--
45-60 mins warm up before touching a barbell
Then 15-20 minutes between sets
I'd almost never get out of there in less than 2.5 hours, but I'd have put in less work than I did at the University gym in 60 minutes. For example, in the Uni gym, I'd walk in on a squat day:
20 bodyweight squats, and load 135 on the bar hit it for 5-10 reps
(2 min rest)
225x whatever
(2 min rest)
315x whatever
(2 min rest)
405x whatever
(2 min rest)
500x whatever, then some work sets. So I'd be at 500+, which would be the weight for my worksets in roughly 10 minutes from walking in the door. The same thing would take maybe 90 minutes at the PL gym.
Add to that the fact that the Uni gym was right around the corner from me, and the PL gym is 20 minutes away, and you're talking a huge time investment.
That's what made me choose one over the other. Time has generally been my limiting factor, and I can't really sacrifice several hours per week just for a little better training environment.637/390tng/615 - belt/wraps, best gym lifts.

Yowzers at that TV shot. Had to Google Tannerite. That, coupled with my above post about not wanting to put in time at a PL gym, is making me out to be quite the girly man.

45-60 minute warmup to just touching the bar?
Thats crazy. I'm usually at my work sets after about 40 minutes and I take my sweet time warming up, top to bottom checklist basically.

Ill do about 10 min worth of dynamic warm up movements. Then bar for a warm up and maybe four other warm up sets. Takes about 20 minutes total maybe? Then again I'm dealing with a lot less weight than most.

Ugh, really sucks that Malan tore his pec. Hopefully he can recover from it. Pec tears suck.
Is Derek Kendall doing bob2?

Training at a big PL gym with other PL'ers:
Walk in -> 20-30 min of saying hello, chit-chatting, people asking about your training for the day, when's the next meet, how much carbs you ate, how's the last meet etc.
Get to the change room -> other PLers in there as well -> 15 min of saying hello, chit-chatting, people asking about your training for the day, when's the next meet, how much carbs you ate, how's the last meet, flex show in front of the mirrors etc.
Get to the warmup area to stretch -> other PLers stretching as well -> 20 min of stretching, saying hello, chit-chatting, people asking about your training for the day, when's the next meet, how much carbs you ate, how's the last meet, flex show in front of the mirrors etc.
Then you're finally at the squat rack, usually takes me about 15-20 min to work up to working sets, 60-80 min to finish working sets if I'm doing lots of sets + more chit-chatting and spotting between sets.
So yea I usually spend my whole evening at the gym. I enjoy training alone when I'm at school, but I really value the community we have at the PL gym. They're all my homies :')Last edited by martin_mathers; 08-19-2015 at 06:09 AM.

I'd rather be weak (which I am) and have no support but have the freedom (which I do) to train alone at home with my music at my times and with my dogs in peace and quiet.

more and more recently (maybe because it's the summer and there's tons to do) I've had thoughts like "fuk I wish I could just go do my benching in my garage today I don't feel like going to the gym". I never used to feel that way but it's making me think at a minimum I should buy a bench and weights so on those days i'm not feeling it I can still get some quick work in
Question for people in cold weather places with home gyms - is it bad for the equipment to be in freezing weather if I leave it all in the garage? Also, how is it training in freezing cold weather?
I have no room in my house so garage is only option and in Chicago areaLog -> http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153108621

My stuff has survived several Canadian winters in an non-insulated garage (connected to the house and with another home fairly close) and shows no sign of giving up. My biggest concerns are maintaining the bars and that the stereo fuks up when it gets super cold.
If you're used to cold, windy Chi-town winters you'll be fine. I train at night, sometimes around 10-11 pm and prior to a dog walk I'll fire up a small space heater to take the edge off and I'm good. I guess you could keep the door shut but I never have. I like the feeling of doing something that hardly anyone else in the world is doing at that time and you will too.CROMAGS1985, The ******* who negged me for no reason, Here is your answer, This is probably a strength related issue, So i am better off asking strongmen.

All this talk about winter has me fired up for hoody season lol. Was just wheelbarrowing concrete, pouring and shoveling it for a pool this morning before it got too hot (7-1030am) but it was still brootle heat.

I'm about done with summer myself. Mostly just because I'm really looking forward to some holiday vacations because there has been just too much idiocy at my work lately.

That sounds awful to me, although I lift in a commercial gym where most people have different goals. Don't get me wrong, I like lifting with others, but lifting takes long enough as is. I'll talk to a select few people, but I try to stay to myself mostly at the gym.

fall is such a great season I can't wait til it comes, the problem is what it leads into. But from like september 1st through mid november it's my favorite time of the year with weather, baseball, football, basketball starting, great TV shows, etc.Log -> http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153108621

Winter is the worst. No motorcycles, crappy, crappy drivers and the sun rising and setting while I am at work.
Such a garbage season. It'd be like staying fat while running marathons because it's more impressive to finish a marathon when you're overweight. It might be impressive in the short run, but in the long run it just doesn't make any sense. ~breathinglife

I don't really mind winter. Summer in Scotland is just humidity and warm rain, not something to look forward to or miss when it's gone.
