I had originally not planned to write up my meet experience just because I dont think to many people really care. However, I set 4 goals for myself for this meet and I achieved all of them; couldn't resist since I was so happy with my performance.
Back story: Last (and best) meet was 6 months ago. I went 518/358/573 -1449 @ 242. I ran Smolov Base and went 550/340/585 - 1475 @ 246 lbs in a gym setting.
I decided I was entirely to fat at 246lbs and decided my long term goal was to cut back down to the 220s, but maintain my strength. I ran a modified Sheiko program (written by David Bates) that has a heavy bench focus. I started cutting carbs about 15 weeks ago. On an empty stomach I managed to cut down to 232 lbs.
I complete with NASA. I noticed the American Record with NASA in 242 Intermediate were unusally low. Squat - 529, Bench - 358. I knew I was capable of beating both, and I was going to be out of that age group in a few months. Most people here think chasing records is ghey unless you are a pro, and I would normally agree. However, I felt I needed "something" to push me as I felt my training had become a bit meaningless lately.
Meet day. Traveled to Illinois the night before and slept a few hours in a hotel. Ate alot of biscuits and gravy then headed to the meet (its nice being under weight and eating whatever you want). This is a gym meet, and a rather small one. There were a total of ~25 lifters with only 11 in unequipped powerlifting. I weighed in at 236lbs on a very full stomach. I was a little un confident starting out - last 2 weeks in the gym I felt very over trained and beat up.
Squat. Warmups went ok, warmed up to 405 with wraps. For some reason NASA had a monolift at this meet. Decided to walk-out to not screw anything up.
462lbs - opener - cake walk.
496lbs - 2nd attempt - not as easy as its been in the past.
535lbs - 3rd attempt - 3 white lights! (Meet PR)(NASA AR)
Big thanks to Jason for giving me the Rhino Anaconda wraps! They did their job well!!
Bench. Warmups felt great, ended at 295. The bench they were using was a little shorter than I was hoping... short benches cause me to lift my butt.
320 - opener - 1 red light (butt)
342 - 2nd attempt - 1 red light
363 - 3rd attempt - 1 red light (PR)(NASA AR)
Deadlift. Deadlifts felt horrible last 2 weeks and I had neglected my Goodmornings as prescribed in the program. Suprisinly they felt good warming up - ended at 455.
496 - opener - easy
540 - 2nd attempt - not as easy as I hoped
579 - 3rd attempt - GRINDER, but 3 whites. I chose 579 'cause that would give me a 2lb overall total PR
1477 @ 236 (2lb all-time PR while being 10lbs lighter)(28lb meet PR while being 6lbs lighter) ... I ended being the best overall unequipped powerlifter of the day with the highest coefficient. I achieved my meaningless records, lost significant weight while totaling more, got a bench PR, and went 9/9. Yes, this was a successful meet and successful training cycle. Not sure what more I could ask for.
RAW ELITE OR DIE
