On a basic level, the sanctions are meant to put the squeeze on the russian people in general so they in turn put political pressure on Putin to stop the war.
I wish Putin luck with his 2022 goals of becoming closed off to the world like north korea.

Apparently, because Russia was disrespected for years (by the USA) after the dissolution of the Soviet Union
Cliffs:
- Soviet Union dissolved
- Leaked document by US basically saying only the US can be a superpower
- NATO boundaries respected until Clinton's second term
- NATO expands eastward despite promises previously made
- Russian population feels disrespected, making their president unpopular. Made to feel like insignificant peasants
- Putin comes to power, asks to join NATO. The US turns him down. Putin asks to become part of the EU, EU turns him down
- Putin concludes USA cannot be trustedLast edited by AlfBundy; 03-09-2022 at 04:26 AM.

- financial markets gone, investors fleeing, currency is worth peanuts
- stock exchange has been closed since the invasion
- container shipping with the exception of food, medical and essentials mostly gone
- carmaking gone
- air travel, airplane parts and know how gone
- companies leaving in droves, boatload of people got canned already
- sovereign bond payments are due next week
They are actually a week/a couple of days away from going full Venezuela style default

Agree.
The poor and middle class of everywhere that people need fuel and food.
I believe this. The lower classes were already accustomed to a different standard of living.

Russia will come out of this stronger. It will take a few years but being severed from internationist corporate garbage will eventually be for the best. Russia is Iran's closest ally and they have not only seen what America and the west have done to them (terrorist attacks, attempted color revolutions, massive sanctions, etc.) but how the nation has survived and is becoming more self sufficient. If Iran can survive and grow so can Russia, and in fact Russia with its land and resources will grow into a very prosperous nation hopefully. But they have to weather this storm and it included standing up to "liberal hegemony."

Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia already had their new financial network in place, and in all signs point to them going back on the gold standard. The west is still piddling around with debt instruments and while may appear to have the upper hand now, we're all going to get cucked hard with all of those in on the build back better plan across the globe.#sunyourballs

the country as a whole will probably roll back into stone age if the sanctions stand, but the rich can continue going to other countries to buy stuff, while the dirt poor (majority of russia) will continue getting drunk.

Every Russian who works for a foreign company now has no way of getting paid.
You're crazy if you think these sanctions are doing nothing.
Enough? Maybe not. Nothing? JFL.
I think the vast majority of the sanctions are just going to be used as bargaining chips during the eventual ceasefire or peace negotiations.

This. Biden didn't move to stop imports of Russian OIL until Putin already said they would stop selling their oil.
It was like quitting after already being fired.
Kind of crazy how most of the country does not know this.
US may not, but other countries do. Which means when US and other countries stop using Russian oil, there is less oil to go around. Period. Just one country moving away from Russian oil hurts everyone else. Which is why Putin said he was going to stop exporting oil for some rand raising prices for others.Forever alone?
