Between work schedule and life currently. Being able to take the course at my pace and when I have free time is the only way I am going to be able to start medic in the next two years unless something drastically changes. I know taking it online is not the ideal choice but it is one of the few options I am faced with. So I am trying to gather as much information as I can about it.

First shift on the ambulance on a saturday....SUCKED. We made about 6-7 runs after midnight.

Got hired back so got to make some good money at a slower station. Made a few runs on the truck but no fires or anything fun.

I know I wouldn't suggest to anyone to take the class online. Just realizing the situation I am in. If I want to do my medic anytime soon I am going to have to view that as an option.

Took EMT-I a long time ago... When I got my paramedic everything had lapsed so I redid Basic and went straight to Paramedic. I know NREMT only requires you have a Basic to test for Paramedic so as long as the school/course provider lets you in you are good to go without the intermediate. I don't really see the point in doing intermediate unless your work is paying for it and you get a bonus as soon as you finish it. Otherwise just do paramedic and save yourself the semester and the rideouts - you will do more than enough during paramedic that you aren't missing out.

My intermediate course basically had the same hours as basic with the addition of an OR shift to make sure you got your intubations. If I remember right it was 3 EMS, 3 ER, 1 OR, 1 L&D. Should be as simple as looking up the course/school where you want to take it to confirm exact requirements.

As far as taking classes online - I'm fine with it. I took my basic online (for the 2nd time). We still had to come and test off on the required skills. I can't pay attention to a lecture for anything so non-lab class time adds nothing to my education.

I definitely agree with this. There aren't that many parts of the country where an EMT-I cert is all that valuable, so it's something that would kinda limit you to the places near you that still use Intermediates. Not a bad thing if you'd like to stay where you are, but it's not going to do much for you if you decide to seek employment a little further from home. If you're gonna put in the time and effort you'd be better off going right to Paramedic.

Depends on your call volume, or if you're day shift or graveyard shift.

I'd personally rather run all day on an entire 12 than sit there bored out of my mind

It all depends on how the contracts have been worked out where you live. Private ambulance services run emergency calls in some cities, but in others they just do inter facility transports. Some places it's a mix of both.

Around here the privates aren't allowed to respond to emergency calls, they just do transports.

Yeah it was stressful to the max, but I overcame it and passed the tests. On to the next house now. How's everything going with you?

BTW, sorry I keep trying to rep you, but it wont let me...literally for the last 6-8 months I haven't been able to

No problem man, I don't really care about reps.

Things are alright with me, still on the engine and loving it. Staying busy, even on the slow days.

Just got done doing 4 straight days at the station. Wasn't that bad because I was on the truck. Made about one run after midnight each shift.

Probably be on the Ambulance on thursday, maybe even riding one of our "peak demands". Which get put into place at certain times of the day.

Definitely the toughest test I've taken. I walked out extremely frustrated as did a couple buddies that took it. We all passed though. I found this article while I was waiting because I had to wait over the weekend for results.

    http://cmattoon.com/articles/medicin...nremt-shut-off

It helped ease my mind a lot. Explains how it's set up and how is graded. Some good info for those yet to take the exam.

Thanks man! I'm in California. More northern. If you're taking the NREMT soon checkout that link I posted above. It will give you some insight. As far as the test it self remember your ABCs, know your shocks, and know pregnancy complications. If you look on that article 31% of the test according to that is on OB/GYN. Mine felt like it was even more. Haha. Good luck though!
