I agree that you don't have to take the test, but I think you should still read books and watch videos. Yeah, you can learn Security without reading the Sec+, but it'll help. It'll show you the kinds of things you'll be working with and to learn some basics. IDS, IPS, basic encryption, basic networking, ect. Just like reading over the MCSA book. Will it show you how to do your job? No, because things are always different. Will it give you a good understanding of the Sysadmin world? Absolutely.

This a handy reference book that actually goes into some real life pen testing tactics. The "lateral pass", "special teams", "The screen", and "quarterback sneak" are all fairly up to date.

It's not much on Amazon, so I'd still buy it as a desk reference.

Specific things I'm doing on my own time. Going to do a Snort setup on a Linux VM sometime soon to learn that.
I really need something as a starting point. I was thinking about reading over the Security+? What do you think? I also found this book as well. Let me know if this book is good or just a Security+ book

It's hard to say given I really don't know your experience level with stuff like network design, TCP/IP, protocol awareness, the 3 way hand-shake, etc
Here are some awesome books to get you started if you have a basic understanding of Network+ type material.

Chris Sanders, the author of two books above, also wrote a bunch of articles for windowsecurity.com, which is another good resource.

I know him personally from working on DoD projects together and he's a smart cat.
The stuff may seem "outdated", but the info is still pretty relevant since most corporate environments are still running win 7/2008.

So I got a call and email from a technical recruiter yesterday. I followed up and spoke with her today and I think I did really well answering her questions directly but I'm not sure I'm interested in the opportunity.
Same pay and I'd be starting from scratch getting to know new people and processes for the same pay through a new contracting agency and client. I'm leaning towards turning it down but it's worth at least checking out I guess and keeping my interview skills up to par.*MFC*

Went in this morning to fill out my pre-employment paper work, drug screen, etc. Had a chat with the IT Manager and another technician afterwards, place seems really chill and laid back. Excited to start Monday.
IT Manager told me I beat out 9 help desk employees they have on staff that all applied for the position, so if I get some bad looks from them to not worry about it. Should be fun lol.Type 1 ginger that took MT2 for 5+ years and now getting mistaken for African descent crew:

Got paid to study for my A+ for about 6 hours today. There was nothing to do so I just sat in the back and read. A good portion of my day is spent studying during the times between tickets.
I got my first paycheck as well. Man it feels good to have a real job that has no problems giving out overtime. It's a very basic position, but with no degree, certs or experience, it's hard to beat. Hopefully I can get my A+ soon and then start working on my Net+ after that. If I get my A+, then I can get 6 credits for school and skip two of the core classes. Man, I love IT. I wish I would have realized this sooner.

Congrats bro. I am in the same boat, I have a degree but zero certs and VERY little experience from 5+ years ago that I felt like might as well not even be on my resume with such a large gap of time in between. Feel extremely lucky to just get my foot in the door with how competitive it is out there, srs.

IT Technician is my title along with 2 others and an IT Tech Lead, but we have 12 help desk employees that work 8-5 with us and at least 4-6 NOC technicians that work rotating 8 hour shifts around the clock so I'm not quite 100% sure what's to be expected of me as far as day-to-day just yet. My "job expectations" that were on the job listing were incredibly broad, anywhere from tier 1 help desk stuff to network and system admin stuff it sounded like. If I get to do a little bit of everything that'd be great.
I'm shadowing the IT Lead for the next 2 weeks and supposedly getting my feet wet starting Monday so I'll know more in a week or so.Type 1 ginger that took MT2 for 5+ years and now getting mistaken for African descent crew:

Not exactly, I was really more concerned with getting in and kinda low balled myself a little since
1) huge gap on resume and very little experience, didn't feel like I had any leverage really.
2) next to zero opportunity for entry level stuff around here.
3) next closest city is an hour and 15 minutes away, that commute would blow so hard. This job is literally less than 5 minutes from my apt, I can get to it without hitting any major traffic lol.
But the benefits are pretty good. health, dental, and vision are all top notch. 401k 50% match to first 6%, pension plan, long term and short term disability premiums are paid for by company, free gym membership, discount off cell phone bill, life insurance policy premium paid by company, 8 holidays plus 1 extra of my choice, after 1 year of service I can go back to school for my masters and they'll pay all tuition costs at my university here, vacation and sick leave etc.
They're also big about promoting within so after a couple years if something opens up I'll be ready to negotiate something. I also still have my marketing on the side so overall I'm sitting pretty well.Type 1 ginger that took MT2 for 5+ years and now getting mistaken for African descent crew:
