I's say 40 acres would be about right. 20 of timber and 20 off pasture/tillable land

Yeah I've gone back and forth on that debate...
My line on 20 was that, with the right equipment, small tractor and such I could affordably manage 15-20 arable... And then whatever forest etc... I don't know that I could manage 40... Without then increasing hired labor, extensive irrigation etc... Which is more than my experience level can "Vouch" for as being manageable for start up in these current conditions which have somehow turned farmers into "Enemies of the state" compared to the Heroes of Bankers and Realtors.

We live on 40 acres at my (parents) house.
We lease 95% of it to hay bailers who tend to take pretty good care of it with the right stuffed being sprayed on it and what not.Leo/Military Supporter. Bustin my ass to save yours!!!!!!

Well, figure on 10 acres of pasture and 10 tillable, you could easily do that with something as small as a 20 horse garden tractor. 10 acres might seem like a lot, but when you stand there and look at a 10 acre field, it's freakin small.

Funny story.
Not only do I compete in strongman competitions, I'm also a promoter and my dad and I have been promoting a contest for the last 5 years.
One year, I sent a text message to one of the guys asking "Can you bring some 45 lb plates to the contest?" The only problem is that in T9, the word "plates" pops up as "slaves".
So instead of asking for weights, I asked him to bring some slaves. It probably wouldn't have been as funny if he was white.
I just believe that if America is going to survive in the long term that we need to re-localize our food production.
Right now something like 87% of all the food you will eat today came from an average of 1400 miles away.
That's 1400 miles of transport cost (On a dwindling oil supply across D+ infrastructure bridges and roads) and an average of 2.5 re-distribution sites, where Middlemen Distributors put a mark up on the product to line their pockets.
And I couldn't agree with you more.Last edited by lhprop1; 04-20-2011 at 09:40 AM.

Yeah when I moved up to sales back in the Ad Agency my two specialties were small trucking companies and construction/remodeling contractors.
If we wouldn't have had that 2008 gas prices hit... And then the real estate and construction crunch, I would have kept my job, and enjoyed advancing there. (The other sales people fought tooth and nail against each other and me on every industry except blue collar... Those accounts they handed to me like they thought it was a dirty rag.)
It really is nuts how as a society we've screwed up the world!6'4"

I don't think I've ever hit 40 hours this early in the week before.

Turkey hunted w/ Shelia again this morning. Called one in who put on a great show, but he strutted/gobbled for over 30 min just out of gun range. Enjoyable hunt.

You know who is a very unlikely archer? Christina Applegate. That's right, Kelly Bundy was I guess a World Class Archer.

WOW, you ever seen the video of the guy shooting skeet with a bow? Dude is nasty quick and accurate.
O for sure. I'd love to shoot a few of the guns they have on there. The shotgun they used looked pretty badass. But I know Benelli(sp) isn't cheap.Leo/Military Supporter. Bustin my ass to save yours!!!!!!

I think some of the pumps they make arent bad but Im sure the semis are more pricey.
I like to watch impossible shots on the outdoor channel as well.(it should be on tonight)
I think its Byron Ferguson who shoots the longbow on there and that dude is amazing. Ive seen him shoot a drop of water out of the air"I believe that life isn't worth living if not lived passionately." - Nainoa
