I've just started doing these myself. From what I've read and heard they are good for the outer bicep head. So far I can honestly say I feel a burn/pump in the outer biceps but in the end size increase will be the true sign of it being an effective exercise for width.

Close grips are sweet. You cant really use as much weight, but the pump is great.

like close-grips, they work the outer part of the bicep well, something that a lot of people neglect. close-grip chins are much harder too!
    God Bless,

used to do them because people kept claiming this or that part worked better; meh, dropped them after a while. regular width grip is more than sufficient.

I agree. If you have a definite weak outer bi's, brach, it may be worthwhile to do, or once in a while for variety's sake, otherwise, regular shoulder width grip will give you the best mass gains.

this is kind of a side note, but i did these a while back with a straight bar and hurt my wrists and forearms. Of course the best way to do close grips is with an ez curl bar but i've heard that those don't give you the best bicep workout anyway.

I had the same problem with BB curls. I haven't used an EZ curl bar in awhile, but when I did I could tell that the narrow hit the outer and the wide hit the inner. I could actually see when I doing one grip more by the shape of my biceps. It seemed harder to hit the brach though.
