I don't think the 660ti is a good idea, the 192 bit interface is really crippling. The 7950 is a way better card for the $ and handles AA like a beast.

I already have a chassis and DVD drive. I also have a bunch of misc. hard drives from older PC's that I slapped in for extra storage. 1x500gb from a laptop, 2x80gb from an old raid setup, 1tb external and 1 40gb from back when 40gb used to be a lot lol. I'll use those for general storage and use the SSD for frequently accessed data. When I get paid on Oct. 15th I'ma hookup a projector and sound system to it. I've been wanting a project for over a year now and have been doing a lot of research and homework before I purchase. As of now this is what I'm looking at if anyone has any suggestions or experience with home theater projectors:

lmao, ummm, I don't know. Just general multitasking, maybe a little bit of gaming and yea I do plan on running this as a server (I manage servers for a living). I'm very impatient when it comes to navigating computers and waiting for stuff to load so I was like **** it I'ma do it big lol. I originally had 16gb but decided to get 32 and it was on sale for 149.99 with a promo code so I thought that was a pretty good deal because the 16gb was 99.99. For an extra 50 bucks you might as well go from 16 to 32. That, and I'm preparing for the future. I don't want to be the guy that finds out 16gb isn't sufficient 4 years down the road.Last edited by EndingLife; 09-25-2012 at 02:35 AM.

He is running a server. Most servers require lots of ram depending on how much traffic it gets.

Can't decide between Radeon 7970 or GTX(correct me if I'm wrong) 680. 690 is way too expensive.

Can anyone help me build a budget PC for gaming/media? This will be my first build. I'm hoping for <$600, not expecting top of the line performance but if it could run most games on high I'd be pretty happy.

I'd find some parts for ya if I was on my PC.
Generally I'd say get--
CPU: amd Phenom II x4 955 ($95)
GPU: 7850 ($188)
Mobo : cheap socket Am3 with one pcie slot (~$45)
Ram: 8gb (~$45)
Budget case with 480 w power supply (~$40)
Hdd: wd 500gb (~$80)
Windows 7: $99
That's just $592☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ ★cVc★ ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

What resolution will you be playing on? Are you planning on a triple monitor setup? Do the games you want to play have physx? A huge resolution beyond 1080p prefers graphics cards with a more vram so if you will be going beyond 1080p get the Radeon 7970 for it's 3gb of vram. Physx suported games will always prefer nvidia cards. Prices atm have the 7970 at roughly $50 less than the 680.
You can compare benchmarks between the 2 cards here and decide if they are worth the price.

He could always just torrent windows 7 and use windows loader to crack win7's authentication to save $100 and get the 7870.

Kind of personal preference, but with AMD's new drivers, I'd say the 7970, it's cheaper and arguably performs better. If you're using heavy AA - MSAAx8, AAx16, etc get the radeon as the 384 bit interface can handle it much better. Same with the extra VRAM, handles high resolution/multi mont
I think it's a well known fact that the 7970 scales better with an OC.
Honetly, the 680 only excels at lower monitor/resolution (either two 1080p monitors or one 1440) at low to medium/high AA settings.
Once double-quad monitors are in use with heavy AA, the 7970 pulls out the winner by a stupidly large margin.

For those of you that may be interested...
So I have recently picked up an HD 7970; it's been an AWESOME card however, it's only the reference model. I figured I'd pick this up, throw on an aftermarket cooler, and overclock it like crazy... but after seeing some of the prices on aftermarket coolers, I just wasn't sure if it was worth it to spend another $80+ on one. Anyways, this was an impulse buy on my part and I'm just looking to sell it so I can pick one up that's already got an aftermarket cooler on it so I don't have to worry about heat and noise when overclocking.
This is the CARD ONLY; it does not come with the box or accessories... the person I bought it from said he worked with AMD, and when I walked into his house, it didn't look like he was lying due to his house looking like a mini computer parts store lol. He had several of these cards which he got for free, but he's already running 3 in tri-fire so no need for this forth, or fifth, or the sixth card he had laying around.
I'm currently asking $370 shipped (US).
Here's a picture of the card on the first day I got it, Sunday, 09/23/12.
^ You can see how clean it is by the looking at the fins... NO DUST!
