Hey Guys,
I know a lot of the people here are nutritional gods, so I thought I would ask this question;
My girlfriend eats only a couple hundred calories a day (she actually counts the calories, so it's not just a guess).
Sometimes she actually does enough cardio that it puts her in negative calories (according to the calorie counter on the treadmill, who knows how accurate that is though).
I'm just wondering, what is this doing to her?
How bad is this?
She said she had a bad eating disorder when she was younger, went to hospital etc (i think the eating disorder was that she didn't eat, not that she ate too much), and she said as a result she has an incredibly slow metabolism and therefore she 'has to eat only a couple hundred calories a day to lose weight'.
Is such a thing even possible?
Repping serious answers.
**EDIT** My post #26 for those who don't read the full thread:
Cheers for the replies everyone.
I spoke to her a bit more and found out some more information.
She said she aims to eat no more than 500 calories day, and I think she averages around 300 calories a day.
I think she's only been doing it since the start of January, she said she only intends to do it until she loses 11 - 18 lbs.
She weights between 121lbs and 132lbs, she won't tell me the exact amount. But clearly she's definately not fat.
I she's right in the middle of the 'healthy weight range' for that BMI rating thing.
She said after she loses that weight, she'll go back to eating 1,000 calories or so again.
She is losing weight rapidly. Like 4 - 6lbs a week. So she definately isn't eating that much food if she's losing that much weight, especially since her weight is relatively low to begin with.
She said her ideal physique is that of the female swimsuit models.
If she only does it for January and that's it, will it have a significant impact on her? Or is it alright if she's only doing this short term?
Also I'll rep everyone who posted in this thread but it'll take a little while to get around to everyone.

Hmm this is just my opinion but do you think she could be using the "slow metabolism" thing as an excuse to allow her to consume few calories? One would think that if she was doing cardio (or anything to raise her heart rate) that her metabolism would be moderately normal (baring she doesn't have a condition)...w/ that being said I dont think ive heard of anyones maintenance being a few hundred calories.
In your opinion do you think she looks unhealthy? As in, is she ridiculously small for her height?Controlled Labs White Flood / GlycerGrow pre-workout Cocktail review!

When she first told me about her eating disorder thing, I pretty much just ignored her since I was like 'probably just making up stuff to be an attention whore'. Hence why I don't know much about it since I didn't pay attention. But now that I know her more, and have been with her several days in a row and literally seen her eat such few calories, I am starting to believe her now. But I do not believe her maintenance could possibly be a few hundred calories, hence why I wanted to ask here.
She looks fine in my opinion. She's not fat, or really skinny. I'd just put her in the 'average' category as far as girls physiques go. She used to be 10 - 15kg heavier she said. She wants to lose another 8kg but I literally don't see where she could lose 8kg from without ending up looking 'deathly skinny'.
I'm not really concerned at the moment since as I said she looks fine. When she starts to get too skinny I'll tell her to eat more because ridiculously skinny girls are gross.

That's really bad mate.
The justification that she needs 'only a couple hundred calories a day to lose weight' is a bs excuse or likely ignorance of nutrition/etc of the worst kind.
A sedentry person the size of a garden gnome who weighed about 8 kgs would be on maintenance at about 200 calories a day, just to put what your gf is doing to herself in perspective.
Get her help, she really needs to go speak to a doctor, and I think a nutritionalist specialising in people with eating disorders would be highly appropriate.
If she does this for long enough it will eventually kill her.
Sorry to be so blunt mate, but I think it's important to be completely honest regarding the situation.
Good luck mate, and maybe check out the eating disorder support group in here: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=70778You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.

Wow cheers for the replies, I honestly didn't know it was that bad.
Everyone I told this about, would always say to me 'sounds like she still has an eating disorder'. But I just disregarded it since she still looks normal, she doesn't look unhealthy/insanely skinny.
I'll definately pay a lot more attention to her diet though and will try to get her to eat more.
She's always complaining about not feeling well, like today she was saying she had shooting pains in the back of her neck and kept seeing black dots.
So I guess that's likely to be diet related?

If what you report is accurate, your girlfriend is in exigent need of intervention, preferably from a psychiatrist specialized in eating disorders.

If she truly eats few hundred calories a die and does not eat behind your back, then she does need to see ED specialist asap. You should see dramatic weight loss if she does cardio on so little food (subject to medical condition).
Metabolic rate can be tested, it can be expensive but sometimes it worth to pay the money to prove that she needs more than few hundred calories to survive before she does some serious damage to her health.
My sister works at the clinic where they test BMR and only once in 4 years time she saw a woman who's BMR was 312kcals... Very rare case.

Sounds pretty serious bud. She may be only cutting calories a couple of days a week or so, or it could be every day. If she has had problems previously, it sounds like she's suffering again.
To put it into context, a NEWBORN requires 120 - 140kcals per kg per day, so a typial 7lbs baby would need around 400kcal.
This is NOT a healthy intake of calories and she almost certainly will be significantly short on her required macronutrienst, vitamins and irons.
It really does sound like she is an unhealthy place both physically and psychologically at the moment - although if she truly believes that 200kcals is her sustinance requirements it wont be easy to convince her.
Good luck to both of you."I'll do today what others won't so I can do tomorrow what others can't" - such a fitting quote for bodybuilding!

If she wrecked her metabolism by the ED she needs to get help asap and learn that she needs to eat a hell of a lot more. Not much more these boards can do for her, intervention is necessary especially if she is starting to have medical problems. Do not try and fix this yourself dude, you're in way over your head at this point, seek a professional immediately.

i have an ex who said about the same thing, except it was around 1000 cals a day if i remember right. she told me that shes been tested, blah blah blah. i believed her. but looking back on it, she was a high level pageant girl with a mom that was/is incredibly hard on her about how she looked.
yea, dude, your girlfriend needs to get some help.
... but good luck trying to tell her that without starting WW3. everytime i would try to talk to a girl, that i actually cared about, about her skeptical dietary habits, theyd fukin flip the switch instantly. so i really have no advice in that department

When the body doesn't get the proper nutrients, it starts eating itself from the inside out. This isn't limited to fat storage, but also to muscle, internal organs and bones. People with anorexia can suffer heart problems because the body literally breaks down heart tissue to make up for the food it's not getting. Many also suffer osteoporosis, which is often not reversed by going back to normal eating. Because of the lack of proper nutrients, anorexics can have anemia and vitamin deficiency, which can lead to severe health problems. They are also at greater risk for infections. Anorexic women also suffer great imbalances in the sex hormones, which opens a whole other can of worms. In more severe cases, even neurological and bone marrow damage can occur.
100 calories a day is much less than what people ate in concentration camps. Your gf has SEVERE problems.Follow my 2018 competition prep here:

In a university study, experts found that force feeding lab mice diets containing 100 calories proved to make them morbidly obese. So I don't see what the problem is.
Jk. Tell her to join this forum. There's an eating disorder thread here. And tell her that anyone on this site would tell her that she's wrong about her metabolism needing 200 calories to lose weight, no matter what she thinks she has observed.

I honestly don't know anyone eating only a couple hundred calories a day...that might be a form of malnutrition in my honest opinion.

You said she isn't even skinny, so obviously she's miscounting her calories, exaggerating, or has only been eating this amount for a very very short time.
Regardless, if she is eating this amount she should go to a psychiatrist, of course.

Eating that little will harm her. People with EDs tend to fall into the habit of lying to cover their tracks. Google compulsive liar to see what I am talking about.
My prayers go out to her. I hope everything turns out well.
