MHP's Clash of the Titans II & Kings of the Bench III
The 2009 Ronnie Coleman Classic Expo
This was our second promotion that included the classic squat (walked out, taken below parallel and only employing the aide of a powerlifting belt and a pair of knee wraps.) MHP’s Kings of the Bench III & Clash of the Titans II took place at The 2009 Ronnie Coleman Classic Expo. It was our first time at this tradeshow and we got things started off with a bang! I’m very happy to report that we’re planning on returning to The Ronnie Coleman Classic in April of 2012.
For this particular competition we used the progressive bar load system instead of the three attempt system. We were hoping that this format would make the competition more viewer friendly. But one or two of the lifters, who were not in contention for the prize money, held up the process by taking series of attempts that took up stage time without changing their standings. So, after this experiment, we returned to the modern format of three attempts per lifter per barbell lift.

Yes, the way the progressive bar load system works is that lifters can take as many attempts as they want to until they miss two in a row. The bar weight never goes down so lifters can retake the same weight or try and go for 10+ pounds more on the next go around.
This is very similar to the steel log press in a lot of strongman competitions.
It would have worked except we underestimated some people's desire for spotlight time. One lifter was a good 100 pounds behind the leader yet he kept taking 10 pound jumps, which meant that he took four or more attempts back to back and we had to give him 3 minute rest periods so he held up the show for 15-20 mins when his incremental jumps had no bearing on his standings in the line-up (frustrating.)
That's why we returned to the 3 attempt system in 2010.

Maybe we should have made the minimum jumps larger? Say twenty pounds instead of ten? The problems arose when someone was pulling in the 500s and they wanted to go 500, 510, 520, 530 and 540 (or something to that effect) while they were competing against another lifter who was ahead after the squats and benches and was waiting to get started in the low 600s. The 500 something deadlifter was treating the contest like a local meet when they should have had the maturity to realise that they were holding up the lifters who were in contention for some of the prize money. Some of the top lifters got held up for 20+ minutes after they were warmed up and ready to go.
