Humans differ from animals because we have empathy. We try and dispatch animals painlessly as possible when necessary to do so. Animals don't share our concern...there are videos of lions eating a baby elephants guts for twenty minutes while it cries.


As for whether ol hendrix SHOULD have killed the critter, or knew how to do it humanely, well...I have no dog in the fight.

Do you use a club on the trap line? I have a buddy that does. I've also heard stories from guys that had stuff come back alive in the car with them on the ride home from checking traps. I use a 22 pistol. I think about anyone who's been involved in more than a handful of animal kills has had one turn out uglier than they'd like. I don't know Hendrix either, but I've always thought he seemed like a good guy, and I try to give people the benefit of the doubt whether I like them or not.

I generally use a .22 or .22 mag, but the traps do most of the work so it is almost never needed. Our traps are like big mousetraps and are certified to cause unconsciousness in 120 seconds or less for the target animal.

You use a lot of conibears?

I've only really trapped raccoons and I just use the dog proof style foothold traps. I have buddies that trap mostly coyotes and foxes with some bobcat and beaver mixed in. They do some with footholds and some with snares. Most of it is in ag land or adjacent to ag and there are too many pets around for conibears.

And this is exactly what I was doing. I have little to no regrets in doing what I did and would do it again. I was 16 or so and scared my little Feist was going to get eaten up by that raccoon. Perhaps the possum wasn't as big of a threat but I didn't want to take any chances with my small kids ending up in the garage at the same time. OP likes to try and get under my skin.
