China attacking Taiwan is a completely different situation militarily. Technically, their claim to parts of the South China seas is valid. The civil war between the People's Republic of China and Republic of China never ended, and if Taiwan is part of China, something that the US State Department acknowledges, then at the very least the straits are Chinese waters. The US would assert the same if the situation was flipped.

btw- eventually China will take it. Nothing we can do to stop them.
