Seems pointless when PC and Steam Deck exist. People get consoles for ease of use and exclusives, which isn't what Steam is about.

Why I'm holding out hope for is that Valve is working on a SteamOS 2.0 for desktop having used the Steamdeck as a sort of proving ground for its functionality, as well as a way to suss out the level of interest in such a thing.
If Valve can get their own version of Linux out that takes all of the work from transitioning to it from Windows and handles compatibility/compatibility layers to make the process as smooth as possible, then it would be a paradigm shifter for certain. Get that thing out before Windows 10 end of life, and it actually will be the Year of Linux.

Microsoft, in traditional Microsoft fashion, artificially segmented off tons of users based on hardware requirements for their entirely unnecessary and worse hog of an OS, which is now lining up great for them now that Xbox gaming is heading towards life support and their gaming division more closely resembling Sega by the passing headline.
I think that if Valve can lock down a desktop OS that can suit the average user as both gaming device and a functional computer environment on top, then we'll see it with a rebirth of Steam Machines.I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die

They don't have to, you don't have to mod anything.
A PC can be treated exactly the same as a console if you want. Buy it pre built with a warranty. Receive it. Sign in and play. Problem? Send it back just like you would your console.
This is not 2010 anymore. Pc gaming is at its peak and there's tons of options to get into pc gaming that don't involve tinkering or building.. There are alot of companies doing this, and if you have a microcenter near you... Just lol. You don't gotta do chit.
This whole "steam machine" doesn't exist because the amount of people in between c being a console gamer and pc gamer is small. There really isn't a market for people who want to play on pc withpit owning a PC.
Valve is a privately owned company and there are no shareholders to please. They aren't looking for more money, they aren't interested in selling a steam machine at a loss to draw people in to their subscription service or their eco system.
Many companies tried steam machines in the past and they all failed because no one wants them. They do not sell. The 5 people here who think this is a good idea are really a tiny sliver of people. People do not get into pc gaming to have less options. The people who want a "console experience" from their pc is really a drop in the ocean.
More than the world needs a steam deck. Some of yall need to just get with the times and realize pc is really pretty simple if that's what you want it to be.
The only game I mod is assetto corsa.... Installing mods is as simple as opening the launcher and just pressing install in the mod browser. Even modding, Esp for more popular modded games... Is easy as chit. Streamlined for games so you can literally just click and drag or just press install for most mods. Gone are the days of needing to go into files and change things etc etc.
I think many people just don't realize how easy pc gaming is now because they haven't been on a PC since back in the day when it wasn't as popular and streamlined.Sometimes I park in handicap spaces, while handicap people make handicap faces
