It's literally joke after joke with perfect timing and delivery where the audience laughs after each joke
Try coming up with just 1 joke that would make an entire audience laugh, let alone 30 mins to an hour straight of jokes and funny stories
I'm talking about guys like Louis CK, Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, and their equivalents

How do comedians come up with 30 minutes to 1 hour of stand-up material?

they write material like musicians do
its also mainly being able to have chemistry with the audience of all demographics.
they often engage with the audience about the joke for a good 5 minutes before going into their next segment.*** Free Thinker Crew ***

Was going to post this. Most comedians kill time talking with the audience. Most of their stuff is not funny, the audience either will have forced laughter or they will be drunk to find most of their stuff funny nowadays. The one comedian who actually prepares with clever jokes nowadays is Anthony Jeselnik. Most other comedians just have retarded ramblings or story telling for 30-60 minutes in addition to engaging with the audience. Famous comedians like Chappelle, Kat Williams, etc don't even have to be funny or clever anymore. They just tell stories but because of their reputation they don't need to be funny.

Obviously, they practice, write, re-write, or perhaps hire writers to write jokes for them. And good comedians can improv or react to audiences on the spot.
Personally, I like comedians who can be funny without cursing/using foul language.*Simplicity is the key to life*

Had a client who was a high level comedian for a few years. They are constantly writing and practicing material, especially in front of audiences. It isn't unusual for good comedians to attend 3-4 open mics a week to try out new material, and then they analyze what gets laughs, what doesn't, what plays well for white people versus black, young versus old, etc. Then they string 5-10 minute sets together if they have a longer show. Also, the guys who do 30-60 minutes are top tier and will definitely have the same material.
He would take notes on his phone all the time if something happened or a topic came up, and then just refine jokes about it. Like another poster mentioned, it's not unlike a musician or an author.

They write jokes every day and have teams of guys writing them for them too.
Its like how most singers dont write their own songs. There is a song writer out there for every persons style.
One of the most popular country western song writers was some jewish guy from nyc. he just had a knack for it and wrote a lot of famous songs.
For most of us thinking up a joke is hard but if its you sole job, not so hard."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

Stand-up is basically acting. Comedians script and memorize jokes the same way actors memorize lines, and they practice their physicality like facial expressions and movements around the stage the same way an actor would hit their blocking.
How do they memorize 30 mins worth of material? Same way a lead actor memorizes a show's worth of lines, or a musician memorizes a 20 song set.
Comics want to present the image that they're a regular guy just firing off the cuff, but professionals in any field don't take chances like that. They're all prepared and rehearsed.Last edited by FAPhaggot; 04-25-2024 at 09:20 AM.

they have writers, they dont write the whole hour. depending on how good they are is how much percentage they write their own jokes. then others do it for them for the rest.
also like others said they will outright steal jokes and change a few things around slightly to hope they dont get caught.
and a lot of time now days they dont even have 100% jokes, its some long philosophical speech by chapelle or some chit with no punch line to take up air time. which is lame as fuk. one turd on netflix i just watched spent half the stage time talking about how depressed he was and his boring life stories.
they didnt do that crap in the old school days it was actual jokes the entire time.
someone liek rodney dangerfield which i dont think is the funniest but i will give him credit i have no idea how he memorizes that much **** at once. because all of his jokes are like 1-2 sentences long for an entire hour.🌺 Lauren Brooks Kelly (snailsrus) - Jul 25, 1991 – Jan 29, 2022
