Hi! Today I went to a new gym for my first bjj practice in a new city. The bjj class was moderately intense and quite interesting. Mid-class I was very thirsty and went for my water bottle during a short break and drunk a little bit on the side of the gym mat.
Apparently that's against the rules (drinking water when not permitted and on the gym mat) I wasn't aware of that, excused myself and proceeded with the class.
However at the end of it the black belt instructor told me I was to be whipped by the entire class (approximately 20 persons) with their belts.
In my mind I was telling myself it was probably a joke as I have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu in another gym for 6 months and there you could drink water whenever you wanted.
I refused as I am respectful of other people and expect the same towards me. I am aware of the gauntlet practice when you get a new belt but here it was because I broke a rule I wasn't even aware existed (and I read the rules before signing to the gym - obviously no mention of that one).
I am really puzzled right now because I really enjoyed the class, people were nice but after my refusal to get whipped the black belt instructor told me never to come back.
So am I overreacting or are these practices standard also in other gyms?

New gym new rules. Anything is possible with these gheys.
But since the instructor told you not to come back, there's only one correct course of action to take. That is to pick a random date and challenge him(and kick his ass) in front of all his students and guests(the more people the better).
Make a big scene. Get him to fight. Make him look dumb. Say things like "wtf is the point of taking a self defense class if you can't even prove it now when challenged?"
Even better, wear pads under your Ki so when he kicks you you'll feel nothing. But capitalize on it quick so that he doesn't have a chance to make a complaint.Last edited by theory816; 01-07-2024 at 03:13 AM.

If you have never cooked a pizza from scratch and an experienced pizza maker tells you to do this or that and you refuse for no other reason than you think it's not needed even though you have zero experience making a pizza.
I'm guessing your pizza is not going to turn out very well once it's cooked. That's assuming it ever makes it into the oven to begin with.
Crude philosophy but I'm sure you get the picture."it takes a wise man to know when he is in error and a noble man to admit to it"
