Well, I was a lawyer for a while.

Possible reasons are :

- It happened and before she told anyone else about it she went in shock, took a shower, ... Basically disposed of most of the evidence. They might have checked to see if there were cameras around already and came back with negative findings. That means you have a pretty poor shot at getting a conviction. Meanwhile pressing charges means a pretty gruesome and relatively long trial. Many people choose not to go this route because it would mean a lot of pain to only end up without a conviction.
- They might feel ashamed. Or the girl feels ashamed and the family supports her wishes of letting it die out.

These situations are immensely intense and hard to navigate between the victim, who is a minor and depends on her parents, and the parents themselves. You can't even imagine what it would be like if it happened to your family. You're saying you'd press charges and do this and that but the situation is far more complex. In a perfect world you'd press charges, the police could instantly find evidence and that would be the end of the rapist and your daughter could move on. Sadly, it doesn't work like that.

Hell, the convictions I've seen? Mostly happened because there was an indisposed dead body with DNA in it (of a person that could be tied to the victim) or the victim was an incredibly strong person who was immediately lucid enough to go to the hospital/police right after it happened. However, this is very rarely the case.

Why are there a lot of men (and a few women) who were raped in droves by catholic priests and never spoke out about it? It's not that easy.
