How would the computer be installed with a filter that knows you're viewing porn? How can it tell whats on the screen? Or would they just try to block specific sites?

Probably be a simplified web filter to block anything categorized as "pornography".

And probably just as easy to get around using a vpn or tor...

Yeah, all porn sites have to be flagged as such and are easy to block if you want to. And anyone who attempts to host porn on a domain without flagging it as such will have it shut down very quickly.


As far as getting around it, it wouldn’t be easy. The vpn will mask your IP and packets, but the ip of the porn site won’t change, and the browser has to know what the IP address is to get there, so your browser would almost certainly know it was a porn site. Sure there may be some loopholes along the way, but the route to take them would almost certainly require decent tech knowledge and possibly money as well that I’m willing to bet most 15 year olds don’t have.

As long as you choose a VPN server that's outside of Utah, you'd be free to do what you please. The porn servers/IPs wouldn't matter.

If they could have a machine that could give them unlimited supplies of alcohol and cigarettes do you think the government should mandate that the manufacturers of the machine turn that feature off, and only give the feature to adults 18 years of age or older? The destination IP will be where the VPN terminates. They likely wouldn't accomplish the filtering by IP address anyway, since you can host a hundred+ different sites on one IP, load balanced across many more.

Yeah, I had a complete brain fart with that post. I tried to look into the bill to see exactly what they intended to implement, but only saw that “parental controls would be turned on”. There are obvious workarounds there, but I guess it would depend on how the filtering was done. I also saw that it wouldn’t go into effect until 5 other states passed a similar bill. That aspect could be looked at as one of two ways; either they are just doing something meaningless so they can say “hey, we’re doing things” or they are trying to encourage other states to join them.
