Lucky find
Howdy, Vintage Crew. New guy here.
I'd been assembling a DIY cable crossover system in my basement and I had finished it and was simply looking to find a crappy used barbell set so that I could start putting weight in the air..
After picking up what looked like an old barbell set on Craigslist for a song, I've been trying to do some research to see what it is that I picked up. Judging by browsing the last 50 pages of this thread and doing a thread search on the other 100 pages, I think it's quite possible that I may have the best dumb luck on the planet. It was sold as a "weight bench", and the ad highlighted the old weider pro bench/squat rack with a single photo of some of the plates.
It looks like a complete BEN set, though I can't positively identify the bar or the collars. The half on the left are as purchased, and the half on the right have been rubbed down with a few drops of gun oil and a nylon brush before being wiped "dry" with a terry towel.
Given that this forum is the only place in existence with any info on these, it looks like they were cast in Canada, perhaps in the late 60s/early 70s, but that's all I can dig up on them. I know one or two other people have asked for info, but seems that no one really knows much - I'd love to hear more if someone out there can tell me about them. Can anyone identify the bar??
I'm loving how easy they are to pick up with that lip, and I look forward to lifting these things up for many years to come!!

Nice pickup on the BEN plates!
The bar is likely nothing special. Bars that use hex bolts are usually entry-level and aren't worth much. The collars are likely also not worth much. I have a pair and thought I lucked out when I picked them up for $5 or $10, but it turns out I just got a pair of these:

Either way, nice find!▇ ▅ █ ▅ ▇ ▂ ▃ ▁ ▁ ▅ ▃ ▅ ▅ ▅ ▇

I picked up this pair of 15kg globes recently. Does anyone have any idea of who may have made them or any information of any kind? The handles are 7" which is longer than any DB's I have. My roundheads are about 5 1/2" or so, IronMasters have 6 1/2" handles. They actually weigh closer to 34lbs than 33. There are no markings except the 15 on each globe.
Now OK for Sig line to be a novel

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

The story I heard was that there was a guy who made the 35s and he left the company or retired from the company. After his departure, they stopped making those plates. I also heard that the 35s were available, for a while, just not in sets. You have to buy them separate. I suppose I should go through my old catalogs and price lists to verify.

It's funny, I never really looked into older stuff when I was a kid ( graduated HS in 1977), so I really never knew of 35"s. I never knew they existed until I got much older, and I do like the story you have, it would help explain why the 35's had the older script long after it was changed over on the 45's.
