I have a windows 10 install disc that I used on my current pc build. I have an older gaming laptop I want to get back up and running for my month in Japan so I have something to play on the road. I need a new HD for it and gonna do a fresh install. Can I use the windows disc i have and just buy one of those codes from the reddit place? Or is the disc tied to that code? I dont have a usd big enough to install windows on for the install.

Dont think i can get into safe mode. After giving up rebooting i put my 660 back in, and when i got to desktop it gave me the blue screen code for previous crash, so im guessing it was giving me the option for safe mode when i couldnt see anything on the 1070.
I just get a black screen, no bios image or anything.
Just had a look around the bios, didnt see an option for changing pci-e 3.0/2.0. But my 660 has worked flawlessly for 3 years. Ive made sure its set to run pci over iGPU.
Bios is up to date, but my mobo is old (msi z87 g41 pc mate) and cheap, so the latest update was 2014-07-24. I have a Corsair RM650, which i believe is a good quality PSU, so that shouldnt be the problem.
Going to try putting it back in tomorrow morning, after using Display Driver Uninstaller. Il check all cables etc too. hoping its some sort of driver issue, but i dont get why it would work fine for a day then just stop, unless its truly dead.
I did a bit of googling and found a thread on tomshardware, and someone has the same problem. Card worked fine for about 24 hours, crashed, black screen. Gave it to his friend to try, it worked for him for 24 hours and the same thing lmao.
So annoying
Edit: Think i found the PCI 2.0/3.0 setting, its set to auto, or it can be gen 1, gen 2, gen 3. Guessing thats refering to pci-e 1/2/3, so i could set that to 3Hairy chinese kid

So I am stumped with how to do the wiring for the case fans, this is pretty much all I have left to do, besides swipe in my GPU and SSD from old PC
I'm confused if I am supposed to be plugging the pre-installed case fan wiring directly into the motherboard like below:
http://imgur.com/DnlQjMY
Or directly into these pre-installed adapters?
http://imgur.com/N5VuAS8
The case also has a fan speed connector, but the directions seem to be misleading

Right now the fans are plugged directly into the case, and that #1 adapter in the user manual is plugged into a SATA cable going into the PSU. Or am I supposed to plug the case fans into those adapters? and those adapters are now powered by the PSU?

The Auto setting should be picking 3.0 for you, so that's probably not the issue. Like you mentioned, I'd get into Windows using your 660, run DDU, then shut down, swap the cards, get back into Windows and freshly install the drivers. If you still have issues at that point, it could definitely be a bad GPU. Do you have another PC/friends PC you could test it in?

Bump any guidance?
If you want to use the case's fan speed selector you run the fans to that, the adapter is just a 4-3 connector allowing both kinds of connectors since most MOBO's are 3 pin IIRC. I just went straight to my MOBO with the case fans instead of using the selector so I could use a custom curve in BIOS and no additional software needed to control.
Do you not have a safe mode button on your mobo? If not there should be a way to force for it in your manual (unless it really is that old). If you have a display port/hdmi off there I would just use that instead of installing the old card to clear the drivers.
Damn man, you dodged a metaphoric and possibly literal bullet.Last edited by yourname2221; 07-30-2016 at 05:17 PM.

Yeah I'm really hoping the ddu will do it, only really got to play black ops 3 so far. I think the fact the gpu is powering on is a good sign? Its just not displaying an image.
Don't know anyone else with a decent rig, I do however have a 'htpc' that I built, I could take the components out of the case and try that, no way the card is fitting in that tiny case. Only thing is it's only a 430w corsair psu so in not sure it's enough juice.
But also judging by the thread on toms hardware, there's a chance it will work, and fail after a few hours.Hairy chinese kid

Wow, so my 650w should almost certainly not be the problem.
I dont understand whats going on...
I didnt run DDU as ive read it can cause more problems, i would rather get all my docs sorted and do a fresh install anyway.
So i decided to just uninstall the 660 drivers, and try the 1070 again.
Checked all cables, unplugged all sata's other than C drive just incase this went badly and took components with it.
Used my other 6+2pin connector. Booted up, and saw the numbers show at the bottom right (just before bios). I forgot to take the fking bit of plastic off the card which protects the logo from scratches, and it catches on the fan so i had to shut down immediately.
Booted up again, black screen. Nothing. Tried DVI and HDMI with no luck.
Then i moved the GPU around slightly to make sure its in properly, and now here i am downloading the new drivers.
The GPU for some reason has quite a lot of movement in the pci slot, my 660 does as well, it doesnt feel solid in place. And where it secures to the case with the two thumbscrews, it doesnt line up with the holes correctly, i have to raise it up slightly (tilting the sli side of the GPU up)
So, i wonder if this is just that the gpu isnt seating correctly on its own due to bad design of either my MOBO or GPU.
Will see how it goes today and update later on.
EDIT:
Well i managed to get it to boot, download drivers, rebooted and its dead again. I give up.
Gonna RMA tomorrowLast edited by Grevl; 07-31-2016 at 07:24 AM.

Well boyos the time has come, I am officially up and running on my first ever build. Took around 4-5 hours all together, then another 30 minutes or so doing the Win 10 install and updates.
What do you think of the cable management? I think if I did this all over again, I could do it in about an hour, 2 max.

Sleek looking build. Mirin' time. It took me almost 12 hours to do my first build.
Cable management is probably a 6/10 imo, but you don't really have enough LEDS in there to even show your cables so it doesn't matter.

alright broski's
i got the nzxt s340 case in white from jet.com for $61 and got an Logisys LDXRM12C RGB LED Case Lighting. chit looks crazy bright on youtube and can change to other colors so i'm stoked about it.
Question for the cable management pros, how do people can their wires to look the same color? i've also seen like a nylon shoe lace type running on all their cables. Was wondering the prices to do that? and what is it called?
this is the look i'm going for, except I prob want all black cables instead so help "hide" them even more (this guy i took the pic from has the led strip i also ordered)
